"This trail, in the Allegheny National Forest, has two main hiking loops, plus a cross-country skiing portion. The smaller loop traverses the top of the plateau through woods and lots of Mountain Laurel. It does cross several dirt oil lease roads, and you can see active wells in those locations, but this loop is otherwise a very scenic trail. There are some elevation changes, but they are minimal. The loop length is about 4 miles. The trail loop is well-marked with blazes. The larger loop; however, has significant elevation changes and would not be considered an easy trail due to the eventual climb down to the Allegheny Reservoir and back up. We dub the hike back up the "Vertiginous Climb" as it is a long, sometimes steep hike up. But the scenery, solitude, and chance to see wildlife make it well worth the trip. It is between 8 and 11 miles in length, depending on whether you add the cross-country skiing trail into your hike. Again, it is well-marked with signs and blazes. Many overnight, weekend, and week-long backpackers use the longer loop due to some very nice scenic unofficial camping spots in a secluded area near a stream, and a partially developed tent camping area at the bottom near the Reservoir. There is a sign and map at the trailhead parking lot, plus paper maps to take on the hike. A restroom is also at the trailhead."
"Lots of variety in views (numerous types of forest with cute creeks and access to a river). I've done the "Rimrock Loop" as a day hike 3 times now via the AllTrails map. It the app, the trail is rated moderate, meaning it's not a steep mountain trail by any means but has some elevation (over 1,000 ft), some length (9 miles) and you gotta look at your feet to make sure you don't trip. Overall, well-marked trail."
"Not an easy one for sure... not for beginner at least. When there’s water you will have to cross the stream for like a dozen times. Make sure you are well equipped and ready. Hint Timberland boots is not tall enough lol. Taking it clockwise is a good idea. The bottom part (southern part) is more difficult. After all those crossings it would be pretty smooth and easy."
"It is a great place to get away but the path needs a lot of improvements. As you can see on the pictures, somebody painted arrows (useful) and others are placed by hikers. Recommendations: to do the path clockwise. In one picture you can read they are making changes but you cannot see it on the map. They also put a phone number. However there is no signal phone... No drinkable water so make sure to take it with you. I did the path with my little brother (13) who is not use to hike and did it in 7 hours, we had time to rest in the campground and relaxed next to the river."
"Primitive camping as well as a great place to day hike. Beautiful scenary along the paths. I camped along a gorgeous stream. What a special place. Highly recommend this. I saw a small portion of the forest and trail system and plan on going back."
