Reviews of Tana Ethiopian Cuisine
"We ate at Tana and experienced Ethiopian food for the very first time today with some very good friends of ours who are well versed with Ethiopian cuisine. Granted, they helped us make our ultimate dining choices, but they were quite similar to chat the waitress had suggested a few minutes before they had arrived (lol). But boy oh boy were we wowed by the results!! Now, we got a lot of different things, so I’m not going to speak to everything, just my absolute favorites, and I’ll use American descriptions - best vegetable dishes - fried lentil appetizer, green bean and carrot entree, cabbage entree. If you like vegetable dishes try Tana. You’ll be given Ethiopian bread with which to pick up your meat or vegetables, the bread serves as your utensils, or if you prefer you can use a fork or spoon, they’re easy!! The bread can be sort of filling! It doesn’t have much of a flavor of texture but serves its purpose. Oh and if you use up the bread they give you, they will gladly give you more!! If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy vegetables, or just a new cuisine entirely, try Tana. You won’t be disappointed. We we’re entirely delighted!!"
"Stopped in here tonight for dinner. Neat little place. Started with a St George Ethiopian beer, wasn't real cold but was tasty. Bought 2 vegetarian dishes and 2 beef dishes, all were good."
"Went here for dinner with my wife and child and overall enjoyed our experience. We ordered one vegetarian and one meat sampler (served on the same platter with extra injera) and one order each of beef and chicken sambusas. We are no connoisseurs of Ethiopian cuisine, but we both really enjoyed the food. Portions were generous. I also got a bottle of St. George beer (one of three Ethiopian beers on the menu), which was good and helped complete the meal. While the food was great, we were a little disappointed with service and atmosphere. There was only one server running the entire front when we were there. She was nice and was working hard, but it was clear she could've used some more help. Atmosphere was also kind of meh and felt more like a bland lunch spot. Maybe some Ethiopian music could have made it feel a little more homey. Still, we definitely recommend checking Tana out!"
"This is my first experience with Ethiopian food (or African food in general). I didn't know what to expect and just wanted to try a little bit of some of the more popular dishes. So, I ordered the sambusa, doro tibs (pieces of chicken breast in spices), and Ye Ater Kik Alicha (split peas in an onion, garlic, and turmeric sauce). All of the food was flavorful, fresh, comforting, and filling! My favorite of the three dishes I tried was for sure the Ye Ater Kik Alicha. It just tastes delicious. It's not spicy, but has a bit of earthiness, a little sweetness, and some savory flavor as well (incredible balance). Plus, you can use the injera to kick up these delicious peas. The injera adds a nice spongy texture, a sour note, and acts as a roti. But this injera was huge (probably 12" across)! They gave me so many pieces as well. Flavor-wise, its not overwhelming and still allows the main dishes to shine. Again, this had a very homemade flavor to it and it was just great. 4.5/5 Since I got the dishes in side portions, they weren't huge. But, they were enough to satisfy me. And, the price was only $5 and $7 for the split peas and chicken respectively. The chicken was quite good as well. Boneless chicken breast with a marinade that wasn't too spicy either. It was a bit on the oily side, but still very good. Another delicious dish to use injera as your scooping vehicle. 3.8/5 The sambusa was also very tasty. These are similar to Indian samosa, but smaller and with a different filling (2 per order). My sambusa was stuffed with ground chicken. It had a nice flavor and crispness to it which I really enjoyed. I don't think it was too oily and the price was okay for the portion. But, I will say that the chicken was quite dry and crumbly. 3.5/5 All in all, I was skeptical about trying this place, but I'm glad I did. This was a great experience for my first time trying Ethiopian food. Decent portions for the prices, flavorful, homestyle food. Would recommend."
"It was interesting experience to have Ethiopian food in Pittsburgh. But the price compare the amount of the food (meat and vegetables are not enough for the roll). And the roll is sour flavor (it’s not their fault, just wanna you early notice if you first time want to try)"
