About the Oxbow Lake Trail
The Oxbow Lake Trail, located in Russett, Maryland, United States, is a beautiful park that spans approximately 70 acres of wetland in the floodplain of the Little Patuxent River. This important area was acquired with the help of the Maryland/DC Chapter and is managed by the Anne Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation. The preserve features the Little Patuxent Oxbow, created over hundreds of years by beaver activity, as well as the Laurel Oxbow Lake, the largest naturally occurring body of freshwater in Maryland.
Visitors to Oxbow Lake Trail can enjoy a variety of native plant species, amphibians, and birds, including the northern spring peeper frog, bald eagle, and blue heron. The preserve also boasts beautiful blooms of mountain laurel and blueberry bushes, as well as a unique ecosystem supported by shallow waters even during dry summer months.
Unfortunately, the water level in the lake has been significantly reduced due to the destruction of the beaver dam. Without the dam, the lake will not hold water, leaving only scattered areas fed by underground streams. Visitors can explore the preserve with a self-guided audio tour and learn about permitted and prohibited uses through the Preserve Guidelines.
By visiting Oxbow Lake Trail, guests can connect with nature, observe wildlife, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this important wetland area.

Reviews of Oxbow Lake Trail
"The trail has eroded significantly over the past 2-3 years. I’m imagining it’ll require a full reroute in a few years from now."
"I don't know if the trails were in the woods (lack of marking) or the paved walkways that are around communities. Entered where there was a sign for trails but it ran out QUICKLY. I came out of the woods into the neighborhood where I was stalked as I walked by a man in a car. So I still don't know exactly where the trails are & was potentially in danger. Neighborhood looks cute though."
"Great place for an easy hike along the water. Trails are reasonably well-maintained. Google map of the trails is accurate."
"Really nice, secluded trails around a lake. Not the best in Maryland, but definitely clean and the people in the area were very respectful of others. Lots of people socially distanced. The majority were wearing masks."
"A gem (in this case, more of a green emerald) right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The trail doesn't skirt the lake too much (but still provides some great views) but goes into the woods for a very pleasant and easy hike which makes you feel like you're in the middle of the wilderness."
