Reviews of Caruso's Grocery
"Incredible night at Caruso’s. I have been low on Italian American cuisine recently, but this place did justice to all pasta. The dishes all had great flavor and were so simple and filling. The specials of the night were abundant and it was hard to choose just one entree. The Alfredo with mushrooms and the sun dried tomato pasta were the standouts, the pasta was delicious and made in house. We were also torn for dessert, so we decided on Oreo cheesecake, tiramisu, and crème brûlée. Definitely get the Oreo cheesecake if it’s available, and only order the tiramisu if you like it very coffee forward, too much for my taste. The service was great but the tables were all very close together in one space which made it very loud as the restaurant was full. Overall great experience and worth a stop if you are in the area."
"Everyone I know in the DC foodie group recommended this place for Italian food. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed. Everyone raved about their homemade noodles, and how good it was. So I figured I would order the spaghetti, one of the most basic Italian meals. There was nothing special about it. My noodles tasted just like I got them at the grocery store And the meatballs were definitely not homemade. Two of my five meatballs were cold also. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his Caruso Alfredo. I really liked his sauce. The portions are pretty small. We got the classic cheesecake with strawberry sauce for dessert. The crust on the cheesecake was delicious. However, once again, the piece that we received was not huge and was $12. My toddler loved it. I guess I was just disappointed because everyone hyped this place up to be amazing with homemade noodles, but it wasn’t. The service was fast with the food. We were in and out in a hour."
"This is my absolute favorite restaurant in DC. Everything about it is amazing. We first came in search of simple, flavorful, hearty comfort pasta dishes to satisfy the cravings. The homemade noodles and gnocchi are amazing, the menu is simple yet versatile and you are able to adventure and taste new things without being disappointed you didn’t stick with the usual—every dish is so good. (from apps to dessert). They are flexible with substitutions as well—sub a noodle or sauce out to explore more options (can’t go wrong with the chicken parm sub vodka sauce). You get free bread, which is such a huge bonus for the spot. The service has always been on point, we’ve have had several different servers and they’re always great and helpful. The head chef, Matt Adler, is also a very awesome and dedicated guy. They are good with allergies (my partner has severe ones). We’ve gotten carry out several times as well— which is still worthwhile if you can’t book a table in time. It is a smaller intimate spot, so you need to book in far in advance— especially for prime dinner time. The bar has space for walk in, but it is very limited. If I can, I always make a point to try to reserve for when people are visiting from out of town. To put in perspective—before they were open on Tuesdays, I waited to celebrate my dinner at 9PM on a Wednesday here (my birthday was on Tuesday). I love it."
"I found Caruso’s on a PBS food show and since I was visiting DC, I had to go and try their Italian American food. First impression of the establishment—nice, clean, outdoor sitting area, and good service. The server recommended the garlic bread as an appetizer and he was right, 10/10. You can tell it was made from scratch. I ordered the same dish as the guy on PBS which was the chicken Parmegiana and it did not disappoint. The pasta, freshly made. I don’t think I’ve ever had pasta that didn’t come from a box but for the time ever, I knew what was freshly made pasta tasted like. The chicken, although looks huge when you see it, it’s a thin cut that one can easily eat. Wine was great. I went with coworkers and I wanted their true opinion and although they didn’t seem as impressed as I was (they liked it though), we all agreed on one thing, the pasta and the sauce was fresh, delicious, and you could really taste each noodle in your mouth. I highly recommend this place and their OG dishes (chicken parm, Alfredo, and of course dessert)."
"This is a must-try for all DC residents. Caruso’s does not miss in any category. Service, quality, value for price, dish creativity, and decor are all excellent. Everything is made in house and you can tell. The garlic bread with the four cheese dipping sauce was delicious. I recommend trying their espresso martini paired with one of their desserts. A perfect way to end a wonderful dining experience. This place is a gem to the community. I can see why getting a reservation here is so difficult."
