About the Cascade Falls
Cascade Falls is a historic landmark and popular tourist attraction located in Elkridge, Maryland. Founded in 1907 as the Patapsco Forest Reserve, the park is Maryland's oldest state park and is home to some of the state's earliest mills and factories. Visitors can explore the park by foot, bicycle, or car, and discover the valley's rich history through wayside interpretive signs.
The park has faced challenges over the years, including catastrophic floods that have damaged many of the valley's historic structures. In 1972, the area was devastated by Hurricane Agnes, causing extensive damage to homes, businesses, and park facilities. Rebuilding efforts took many years, with the Army Corps of Engineers playing a crucial role in the recovery.
Today, Cascade Falls is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with over a million visitors each year. The park offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, with opportunities for hiking, picnicking, and wildlife watching. Visitors can also learn about the park's history and the important role it has played in Maryland's conservation efforts.
Cascade Falls is a testament to the resilience of nature and the dedication of those who have worked to preserve and protect this beautiful area. Whether you're a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Cascade Falls has something for everyone to enjoy.

Reviews of Cascade Falls
"Cascade Falls is not impressive, as waterfalls go. It's only about 8 feet tall, and you must see it on a day during a very rainy period in order for there to be attractive flow over the fall like you see in most photos. That said, there are some positives. The trail from the sizable parking area to the falls is very short....15 minute walk for inexperienced hikers. There are other scenic trails, a river and picnic areas nearby. Don't show up before posted opening hour because gate will be locked at park entrance."
"Great hike, easy trails to follow, nice state park to go along with it. Waterfall is pretty as well."
"This waterfall is accessible through the Avalon area entrance. Around 2 miles from the gate. Medium hike from the parking lot. Very popular spot for photographers and hikers."
"We got here like 3pm on a Thursday. Few cars on a big parking lot. And was easy enough for my husband and me both. 10-15 minutes hike in. Water fall was beautiful surrounded with green trees. Saw a snake just sun bathing. We saw eel in the water hole before. And that’s no one else there. Good for us."
"Our favorite hike to do as a family. Quick 10min hike up to the falls then the trail continues on. Our kids love to go further along the trail and play in the creek which leads to other small water falls. Blue paint markings along the trees make the path easy to follow. Perfect hike for a family."
