While well water is generally available in the park from mid-April to mid-November, starting in spring 2023, the well water in hiker-biker campsites will be labeled as non-potable. Visitors are advised to bring their own water supply or water sanitizing equipment to treat well water before use.
For those staying in Drive-In Campgrounds, the well water is potable and treated with iodine. However, visitors with iodine allergies or on medication for an overactive thyroid should avoid drinking this water. Hiker-Biker Campsites offer non-potable water, so guests must filter, chemically treat, or boil the water before use.
With 184.5 miles of towpath to explore, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and enjoying the great outdoors at Calico Rocks Campsite. Plan your trip accordingly and bring plenty of water as a backup option, as water availability is subject to change.

"Went camping here for the night. Tons of fun for the kids with lots of space and cool views of river and railroad. Train runs ever hour though, so a bit noisy through the night. Haha. Also not alot of firewood available, but overall great since it is free."

"Slept here on a tour of the C&O Canal in 2016. The site is like most others on the C&O with a Porta Potty, water pump, picnic table, and fire ring. The problem with this site is it's directly across from active rail lines that have freight, Amtrak, and MARC trains running all night long. Because of it's proximity to towns the trains are required to blast their horns as they pass the intersections. Be sure to bring earplugs!"
