"The monument is currently maintained by the Maryland Park Service located on top of South Mountain. The tiny museum beside the parking log features historical artifacts related to the history of Washington Monument and the Battle of South Mountain. The ranger in duty was very helpful, sharing interesting trivia related to the monument and the park. Built 1827, this is the first monument dedicated to the memory of George Washington, predating the Washington Monument located on the Mall in Washington, DC. The trail to the monument intersects with the Appalachian National Trail. A small playground for kids at the area. Good place for a picnic with picnic pavilions, and bathrooms. The park is a great place to get a history lesson while you are getting your exercise. As you take a short, easy hike up the trail to the monument, signs highlight important dates in Washington’s life in chronological order. A couple of picnic shelter on the way up is as good place to stop"
"A visit to the Washington monument will be an experience that you will remember. The people that built it chose an absolutely spectacular spot. I would recommend this to anybody... Twice! The walk up the hill is easy and I believe wheelchair accessible electric wheelchair or scooter maybe best. But the view from the top is really wonderful."
"Very nice place to spend the afternoon, the Washington Monument is simple but magical, it takes you back in time, you can go up and see the whole valley. It has trails for those who like to hike, restrooms, and picnic tables. The park charges a fee of $4 cash (envelope)per car. If you are in the area it is worth visiting"
"Fun and easy hike with kids on a maintained path, plus the Appalachian Trail is right there if you want to experience some "rugged" hiking. My kids loved playing in the tower."
"The monument is not visible from the parking lot but it is only a short distance up the trail. Very easy hike of less than a mile round trip. Gate was open allowing us to climb the 34 steps to the observation deck at the top. Active Duty Military and Veterans are allowed free admission into the park. Must circle option on the payment envelope."
