Footbridge to C&O Canal and Maryland Heights

"Lovely trail to the cliff overlook through the C&O Canal and Maryland heights trail. We had a great time hiking with kids and were lucky to even see a cargo train on this track. Couple of pointers- 1. Carry water and snacks - there are not many shops, few expensive pubs/restaurants 2. Don’t miss the caps, sunglasses 3. On the trail, you’ll need bug spray 4. The parking is at visitor center & shuttle to trail head is frequent. 5. Get the maps from the visitor center before starting 6. No dustbins - get a bag, carry your trash back. Leave no trace ☺️"

"The footbridge is a stretch of the Appalachian Trail and is easy to walk across (if you’re okay with the suspension above the water). People have written clever graffiti on the bridge and attached decorative locks in high places. There's enough room to stand and share in the view while others can go around you, for the most part. It's definitely worth a short stop to appreciate the scenery and snap some photos."

"As a short walking path that connects historical Harpers Ferry to the Maryland Heights trailhead, the footbridge provides okay travel to and from. Along the bridge, hundreds of visitors have placed locks along the protective siding to commemorate their time here, which adds a welcoming sense of character. While many won't have issue, those with strollers or wheelchairs will find difficulty in reaching the Maryland side of the where the two rivers meet due to a staircase."

"It was fun to see. We took our dog went over to the Maryland side. Lock33? I think it was. Bike riders are often passed through."

"It's an easy walk to the other side with scenic river views along the way. Seeing the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers was quite a treat, especially as their currents converge at the meeting point. Definitely worth a visit for those exploring historic Harpers Ferry."
