Reviews of Maryland Heights Trailhead
"Spectacular Overlook Views of Harpers Ferry Embarking on a delightful hike from Harpers Ferry Historical Park to the Maryland Heights Trailhead, I reached the Overlook, offering awe-inspiring vistas of Harpers Ferry and the picturesque Shenandoah Valley. The trail, adorned with varying foliage colors during the winter season, was a visual treat. Covering a 2-mile stretch from Harpers Ferry to the Overlook, I'd describe the hike as moderately challenging due to its uphill terrain. Notably, I observed fellow hikers of all ages, including families with children, furry companions, and elderly adventurers, making it a recommendable choice for anyone visiting Harpers Ferry. During my last visit, almost a year ago, I had the convenience of parking near the trailhead on Harpers Ferry Rd, on the Maryland side. However, on this recent trip, both parking locations were closed, leading me to park in Harpers Ferry and stroll across the bridge to access the trailhead. All in all, it was a splendid day for a fall hike. The trail, for the most part, offers a generous width, and although there are some steep sections, they are manageable. As long as you maintain a moderate level of fitness and take your time, it's a hike that most can enjoy without any issues."
"Very steep in places but very worth it. You hike up, down to the overlook, back up to the trail, then down the mountain. Bring a snack to enjoy the trains from the overlook!"
"Parking at the trailhead gets filled up very early, and if you aren’t there before 9am don’t even bother trying to park anywhere expect the main park ! The shuttle is real easy to take to the trailhead. The hike itself wasn’t too special, mostly thick woods without much of a view, until the very end of course. The overlook at the end of the trail is stunning. We got to se a train go through town and it was majestic."
"Challenging trail but the views at the overlook are worth it. If you aren’t in decent shape, I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise you’ll be stopping every 10 minutes for a break which will make for a very long day. The first hour alone is a rocky incline. I saw senior citizens on the trail but they seemed to be more experienced hikers. I did not see any children but with that said I wouldn’t take anyone under 13 years-old. There’s no access to clean drinking water and there are no bathrooms. A four mile trek doesn’t sound bad but it’s a beating if you aren’t prepared to walk up hill for long sections of trail. Bring plenty of water!"
"A satisfying day hike. We took the green trail, then blue, then red, and then back on green. Blue trail - historical signs and info about the Parrot rifle (cannons), interior and exterior forts, remnants of stone walls, etc. The overlook on this trail is higher than the red trail overlook, but nas as good in my opinion because there are a lot of trees that block the view. Pretty steep, constantly, until you get near the top. Red trail - most popular, overlook is wide open. Lots of rocky areas you can stand or sit on, or even lie down to sunbathe. Even saw a lizard sunbathing here. Has more variations of steepness and flatness in comparison to blue trail. Not as many historical signs as blue trail. I would probably recommend taking green trail, then red trail, then deciding if you want to add the longer blue trail to your hike."
