Cooper Gristmill

"Decided to go spur of the moment while spending day with my 4-year-old grandson. I’m so glad I did. He found it fascinating! Emma, our guide was great! She explained everything in detail and took the time to show my grandson firsthand the workings of the mill while he proudly shared his knowledge of the various stones. He particularly enjoyed handling the hand driven devices. Since it was Friday we were given a 2lb bag of freshly ground whole wheat flour (corn flour was the other option), you can see him holding bag as we were leaving. All-in-all it was a pleasurable and informative experience. If you find yourself in the area or coming to enjoy the beautiful fall scenery be sure to stop in. Many nice restaurants and shops in town too."

"Just did the tour of the Cooper Gristmill with Carl and Enzo. Carl's knowledge of the place was great. Awesome to see all of the almost 200 year old operational parts of the mill. They ground some corn while we were there. Only $5 per person. Highly recommend the tour and we purchase some wheat flour and corn meal. Can't wait to make some stuff to eat with it."

"It’s a great park and the trails are pretty well maintained on the county side. From the parking lot head towards the little gate and down the path to the mill. Two trails start here. The best path is to go down the wood steps and follow patriots path (blue blazes) along the river to the Kay center. It does not loop so you’ll have to turn back. The other path through the tunnel under route 24 to Chubb park is trickier and less maintained. Be aware it is not accessible for strollers, mobility devices, horses, etc. there are stairs, narrow boardwalks, rocks, tree roots, mud, and fallen limbs on the trails. lots of people fish in the river though and it’s dog friendly. There is a visitor center but it’s been closed since 2020. The only restroom is the port o potty in the parking lot"

"Enjoyed the day at the Mill learning the great history that is still preserved. There was a tour of the grounds and we enjoyed the scenic trail at Black River."

"Really beautiful and extensive park with a ton of cool features. Recently walked the northern part and it was stunning. Be careful going off trail though, there are sinkholes and I got stuck up to my knees in something similar to quicksand. Nearly lost a boot."
