About the Grave Creek Mound Historical Site
The Grave Creek Mound Historical Site, located at 801 Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville, West Virginia, is a museum and tourist attraction that is part of the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex. The complex includes a museum, an archaeological research center, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum showcases exhibits on fossils, ice age animals, archaeological sites in West Virginia, and the prehistoric Adena people who constructed the Grave Creek Mound. Visitors can also explore the outdoor Interpretive Garden featuring crops cultivated by indigenous people.
The Grave Creek Mound itself is a massive burial mound constructed by the Adena people around 250-150 B.C. The mound, one of the largest of its kind, is a significant archaeological site and a physical reminder of the prehistoric Native American presence in the region. The museum also features exhibits on Adena lifeways, including replicas of Adena structures and artifacts from various time periods in West Virginia history.
Throughout the year, the complex hosts educational programs such as Garden Planting Days, Fossil Day, and Archaeology Day, as well as a Lecture and Film Series on archaeology and Appalachian culture. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the sacred nature of the site and show respect for the indigenous people who built the mound. With its rich history and educational programs, the Grave Creek Mound Historical Site offers a unique glimpse into the ancient past of West Virginia.

Reviews of Grave Creek Mound Historical Site
"A suprising treasure in Moundsville, wow. Very well appointed. Nicely done. Great exhibit about the history of the Marx Toy Company. The history of the Mound people is well told. The access to the actual mound us something not to be missed. There is also a nice outdoor picnic area."
"Very nice museum. The museum explains how the mound was formed and it was such a great learning experience. All the history about Moundsville dealing with Native Americans can be found here. You can walk through the entrance of the museum straight outside to go walk up the ancient burial mound. Afterwards it's nice to see the musuem and get a better understanding for what is there. It is a must see!"
"Very interesting museum with all kinds of interesting things about West Virginia as a whole, not just the Indian mounds. I thought it was great. Probably want to allow a couple of hours to go through at least."
"Moundsville, West Virginia......not named after or from the Mounds candy bar product.....lol. Archeology focused, this little area is interesting from the perspective of how indeginious people lived in the area a long time ago. Not as old as the "mounds" in Ireland, north of Dublin etc... this US site allows one to climb up the trail around the Mound, see a monument, and get a higher elevation view of flatland around the man made structure. Prisoners looked out of jail cells at this Mound, just like the warden and guards did. No re-enactments here, but you might see a "mock prison riot" next door if you live in the area or are on the street this historical gravesite is on."
"Amazing piece of history right in town. There is a lovely little museum you can visit for free that has a number of displays. Fantastic view of the town from the top of the mound, just use caution going up and down the steps (no railing). Gift shop is cute and affordable."
