About the Washington Monument State Park
Washington Monument State Park, located at 6620 Zittlestown Road in Middletown, Maryland, is a historic park and tourist attraction atop South Mountain. The park is home to the first completed monument dedicated to George Washington, a rugged stone tower erected in 1827 by the citizens of Boonsboro. Visitors can enjoy bird watching and spot migratory birds such as hawks, eagles, and falcons in mid-September. The park also houses the main office for South Mountain State Battlefield, where visitors can learn about the first major Civil War battle fought in Maryland. The park offers accessible amenities such as a main parking area, picnic pavilion, and museum, although the comfort station is not accessible to those with mobility impairments. The Department of Natural Resources leads Maryland in preserving and protecting the state's natural resources for a sustainable future. Additionally, the park provides information on the National Human Trafficking Hotline and the Maryland General Assembly's fraud hotline to report any fraudulent activities or abuse of state resources. Visit Washington Monument State Park to explore history, nature, and conservation efforts in Maryland.

Reviews of Washington Monument State Park
"Washington Monument State Park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Maryland. As a history enthusiast, visiting this park was a memorable experience. The iconic Washington Monument, which predates the more famous one in D.C., stands proudly atop South Mountain, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The park's well-maintained hiking trails provide excellent opportunities for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. I highly recommend taking the short but scenic hike to the monument's summit. The effort is rewarded with stunning vistas that are especially captivating during the fall when the foliage is ablaze with color. Beyond its natural beauty, the park's historical significance is profound. The monument itself, built in the early 19th century, serves as a reminder of our nation's past. The visitor center offers informative exhibits about its construction and the role it played in local history. What sets this park apart is its peaceful ambiance. It's an ideal place for a picnic, contemplation, or simply escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you're a history buff or someone looking for a serene outdoor experience, Washington Monument State Park is a must-visit destination. It's a testament to the enduring legacy of George Washington and a tranquil retreat for all who visit."
"Amazing place to visit. You can park in the parking lot to the Washington Monument State Park and it’s a much shorter trail. We walked from Annapolis Rock and Black Rock trail head parking lot, a 3.6 mile hike. Its pretty easy. A wonderful walk in the woods. Very hard to imagine building that by hand in the late 1820s."
"Beautiful place to be on a hot summer evening. There's always a breeze blowing & a few degrees cooler at the monument. You'll have to walk up a trail that's on a slight incline- but we'll worth the hike when you see the view."
"This place is a gem!! Very well maintained, neat and clean with ample picnic spots available. Take a short hike to reach the Monument and enjoy the stunning views of the valley below. MD resident pay 2$ entry fee while outsiders pay 4$ per vehicle."
"A spectacular park with incredible views from the monument. You can get on top of the monument and see Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia & West Virginia. It’s a short 10 minute hike from the parking lot but if you want a longer hike you can hike here from Greenbriar state park & that will be a 6 mile hike. Otherwise you can start here and just take the Appalachian trail for as long as you want. There is a small museum with an extremely knowledgeable gentleman who will tell you about the history of our first president and beyond. There are sites to camp, have picnics and even playgrounds. It’s got something for everyone. Don’t miss the first monument built in honor of President George Washington!"
