Reviews of Patuxent Research Refuge - North Tract Visitor Center
"Beautiful place with lots of hiking biking and equestrian trails. There is also 2 different wildlife loops that you can drive on and one takes you out to the bridge. There is also an observation tower that you can walk up in period it's really a pretty place. Not too buggy for the middle of June but it was warm."
"Peaceful, easy hike. There is a remote feel to this place. Even though it is between Washington DC and Baltimore, don't let its urban neighbors fool you. It even feels a bit desolate. Parking is ample and it's quite easy to find this reserve. I visited during hunting season so most of the trails were closed. Still, I was able to get a 1 hour hike in with other options available. You will still have some hour's worth of hiking options even with all of the trail closures."
"Non-hunting Season Review: Finally got to experience some of the main trails since it is not hunting season. They are gravel paved and nicely wooded. There were a ton of beautiful butterflies and a nice pond to sit by and reflect. Only feedback is there were cars on these trails... not a lot but, I thought that the signs said no cars and there really wasn't enough space for us to walk, stay on the trails, and let the cars pass. We worked it out, but it was a bit annoying. Partly why I didn't change my rating. I still need to go back to do a couple of the other trails. It nice because it is pretty close to DC. Only about 30-40 mins. Hunting Season Review: Very beautiful. But only two short wooded trails open every day other than Sunday during hunting season. There is a main road that runs out about 5 miles through the area. There is a bathroom by one of the ponds and open trails, which is nice. Wish I’d gone on Sunday to experience the other trails. Maybe next time."
"This area definitely takes the top spot for hiking a pleasant trail. Bonus, bathroom access inside the building. Signing the guest book is required. Have much caution if choosing to drive all the way through to the other side of the Refuge. Part of the road is loaded with dangerous potholes."
"This tract is clearly much less used than the South although I’d argue it’s infinitely better. Has a nice parking area and a little visitor center that appeared to be open and had a bathroom. Multiple trails going right off including the Patuxent Overlook and little trail. Neither is amazing but worth doing the loop. Then straight off Turkey way and forest trail are both solid. I’d recommend all."
