About Us
Carsonia Park, located at 905 Byram Street in Reading, Pennsylvania, is a historic park and tourist attraction with a rich history dating back to the 1700s. Originally the property of Benjamin and Mary Custard, the area was home to a woolen mill and Georgian-style home known as the Carsonia Inn. In 1894, John A Rigg and Robert N. Carson transformed the farm into an amusement park and grove, which became known as Carsonia Park.
The park featured a variety of rides and attractions, including the Big Toboggan, Grand Carousel, Circle Swing, and more. Visitors could also enjoy band concerts, theater shows, and delicious food and drinks. The park was a popular destination for families and children, with trolleys bringing thousands of people daily. Carsonia Park also hosted special themed days, such as Italian Day and German Day.
The park had a vibrant atmosphere, with concession stands offering a variety of treats and games for visitors to enjoy. The park office was an important building where employees collected their paychecks. The park also featured a public drinking water fountain and an Edison Building with penny arcades and slot machines.
One of the park's highlights was the Circle Swings, where passengers flew through the air in wicker gondolas. The park also had Crystal Lake, where visitors could rent boats or enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake. In the winter, the lake froze over for ice skating.
Today, Carsonia Park is a beloved historical site, with remnants of its past attractions still visible. The park's rich history and nostalgic charm make it a must-visit destination for those interested in the history of amusement parks in Pennsylvania.
