Reviews of Joy El Camps and Retreats
"My daughter has always enjoyed being a camper at camp Joy El. She enjoyed her time so much that she wanted to pursue being a camp counselor. In order to do so, you need to take part in the 4.12 program. We paid $300 to be a part of this program. At first, I thought the program was geared towards strengthening faith and building strong characteristics in youth. I think the above mentioned 2 things are very much a possibility and priority & necessary for children. HOWEVER, there is an underlying tone of child labor that I strongly disagree with. Asking kids to go to camp as “employment opportunity” NOT VOLUNTEER. They have the kids cleaning the entire facility, bathrooms, kitchens, serving & preparing food, dusting, and all other basic janitorial needs. They “pay” them $2/hr to do so. 9 hr shifts of good hard work for $18??? What is that teaching her? My daughter has forfeited sporting events and opportunities for other employment to be a part of this program. In reality, she is being taken advantage of. I believe kids need to learn work ethic and start from the bottom and work up, but there is a line between earning your keep and downright being taken advantage of. If she wanted to volunteer her time, that’s one thing, but she was led to believe this was a job while also helping a camp she once respected. I caution parents- teach your children to advocate for themselves, work hard, and also be aware that others will capitalize on opportunity to use for their gain. FYI minimum wage is $7.25/hr. That is an appropriate wage for what is expected of these kids so they can learn and gain job skills in an environment that aligns with their faith, and to feel apart of the community at camp joy el."
"I had such a wonderful time! Everything was very close, so it was easy to navigate. There was also a very nice view! The staff were very friendly(shoutout to the one who t-posed with us) and were welcoming! (Edit: a year later. Bread had mold, dishes and utensils are not cleaned properly. I can still see little pieces of food stuck on the forks, spoons, knives, and plates."
"Going to this camp is a family tradition literally. My grandmothers family attended, my father, myself, & now my children attend. My grandmothers family the Hykes helped donate towards the new dining hall. I have nothing but good things to say. I enjoyed going many years to overnight camp as a kid. It was always the highlight of the summer. I have fond memories of swimming, capture the flag, chapel, Pete’s cabin, the peanut butter pit, mini golf, and friends from camp. I did my senior volunteer work in the office as well. My daughters currently attend day camp until I feel they are old enough for overnight. They love going and have the best time. I love this camp 10/10 would recommend."
"The food wasn’t the best but it was very fun and i really enjoyed it!"
"Came to the Joy camp for a church event and I had a great time with Kids and spouse. Everything was fun and wonderful Except the food was not that great. We had a hard time with the food. Staff needs to hire a better food service. The rooms weren't that clean and the bathrooms where really small. We enjoyed a variety of sports football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer. We had a ton of fun with the go carts that was so much fun!!! The pool was very clean and also had great swimming fun at the camp!! We went canoeing on the lake, and we ziplineed also annoyed everything on this camp!!! Over all we enjoyed our selves!!! Thanks for reading my review, please hit like if you like my reviews!!!"
