Reviews of Loch Highlands
"It's a pretty area. The lake is narrow, so unfortunately the wake from boaters speeding through it is almost always a factor. It makes using the available canoe and rowboats a bit dicey. If you do get a small boat out there's nothing to see except docks and cabins. Not really worth the paddle. The beach is small, rocky, and dominated by the two docks. You can wade a bit, but that's it. You can swim off the dock, but it's deep. If you like fishing or staring at the water it'll do I suppose. Unless you have a motor boat or rent one, there's not much to do. We ended up taking day trips to hike and eating out instead of staying at the cabin. We probably would've been better off at a hotel, especially given how bad the mattress was. I ended up sleeping on the couch rather than getting poked by the springs."
"Just got back from our first trip here and it definitely will not be our last! The cabin was so much more than we expected! We were in cabin 6 which was surrounded by trees so it wasn't very hot! wonderful fire pit and amazing swim and fishing docks! (the kids had great luck catching fish here!) My 2, 7 and 16 year old had a blast! Very well maintained, private and quiet! See you next year!"
"My family has been coming to Loch Highland for close to 10+ years. In our opinion, it is a hidden gem. The cottages are comfortable yet rustic and always very clean. Kristen, who now manages the property, is so friendly and always a pleasure to deal with. The property is very unique to the properties situated on the lake in that it has wide grounds for the kids to run around. They have a playground, 2 dock areas, a fire pit (with supplied wood). This is one of our favorite places to visit and they the staff at Loch Highlands always treat us like family. Thank you for the lasting memories."
"This was our third year spending our vacation at Loch Highlands and as always it was a wonderful experience! Kristin is always helpful, informative and thoughtful. She truly goes above and beyond to make her guest feel welcome and have an enjoyable experience. The cabins are exactly what you would expect for a rustic lakeside cabin. The views are gorgeous and grounds are very well kept. There is a boat dock and a swim dock, both of which we have used in our years there. If you are bringing a boat, there is a public ramp about 12 min away but if you are looking for a closer ramp, Seeleys is just 6 min away and costs $10. The cabins are always very clean and neat and include kitchen utensils and cookware. We always bring a few things from home (just in case). There is a campfire pit with wood, great for smores. There is also a swingset and tetherball for the kids. This has become our family's tradition and we look forward to coming again next year!"
"My family has been staying at Loch Highlands every year for the past 49 years, for one or two weeks either in July or August. This family-run property is truly a hidden gem on Lake Wallenpaupack. The cottages are simple and nothing fancy, but they are comfortable and clean. You can’t beat the price for being just up the hill from the lake. The couple who ran the place for many years always made us feel welcome and made sure we enjoyed our stay. It has continued to be run by family members who show the same kindness and take the same care in running this beautiful property on the lake. The cottages are great for couples or families. We stayed in cabin 6 (2 bedrooms, 1 bath) for many years, which is in the shade and has a view of the lake through the trees. When our family grew larger we started staying in cabin 3, which is one of the largest cabins (3 bedrooms, 1 bath) and has one of the best views of the lake. If you find you need more space, you can rent two of the cabins at the same time, if available. We did that a couple of years. We enjoy relaxing on the porch - watching the boats go by on the lake, watching the sun set, and star-gazing at night. We also like going for walks in the area, fishing, swimming off the dock, having campfires in the fire pit, exploring the antique shops in the area, hiking, and have sometimes rented one of the motor boats to go out on the lake or to boat to one of the islands for a picnic lunch, and have sometimes also rented a larger boat from one of the marinas nearby. My family has many happy memories of our yearly visits to Loch Highlands and we continue to enjoy it as adults. As kids we had a great time playing outside, swimming, and fishing. As adults we enjoy, and always look forward to, a peaceful, relaxing stay on the lake. We have sometimes looked into staying at other places, but due to price, location, proximity/access to the lake, and customer service, we have always find ourselves at Loch Highlands. It is a lovely property run by wonderful people and has a very special place in our hearts. Included: • Free Wifi • Kitchen with sink, stove, refrigerator, microwave, table, chairs, dishes, utensils, pots, pans (we bring some of our favorites from home, though) • Bathroom with toilet and small shower • 2-3 bedrooms • Pull-out sofa • Fireplace • There is a window AC unit in the living room and one or two large fans provided. • Electric heat • Cable TV • Blankets • Small grill (we bring our own small grill, though) • Each cottage has a porch with plenty of space to sit and enjoy the view - table and chairs included • A swimming dock with ladder • A boating dock with boat slips • Free rowboats • Motor boats available for rent for a small fee Shared areas: • Fire pit area • Tetherball area • Deck overlooking lake about halfway down the hill from the cabins Worth noting: • Bring sheets, pillow cases, hand towels, bath, towels, beach towels, toilet paper, and paper towels. • I don’t think the cottages are wheelchair accessible, but most are easy to get in and out if you can manage the 2-3 steps up to the porch. Cabin 3 is a little more difficult to access if you have someone with you who uses a cane or walker - there are some steps and a hill from the parking area to the cabin. • In the 3 bedroom cottages, one of the bedrooms has bunk beds. You can still use these as adults as long as you are comfortable getting in and out of a bunk bed. Area attractions we enjoy: • Paupack Blueberry Farm - pick your own blueberries when in season, enjoy blueberry baked goods and ice cream. • Wallenpaupack Brewing in Hawley - good beer • Three Hammers Winery in Hawley - good wine, nice area to sit outside • Alpine Wurst & Meat House in Honesdale - good German restaurant, can buy sausages and other German fare in their shop, as well • Bushkill Falls - hiking and waterfalls • Shuman Point Hiking Trail - hiking • Promised Land State Park - hiking • Wayne County Fair - check online for dates"
