AMC Galehead Hut

"I would like to start with the good. These huts are in the wilderness and all have incredible views, fresh air and beautiful skies. The hut is on the rugged side with limited amenities (no electric outlet to charge phones), no fresh sheets or showers but this is to be expected in the middle of no where. Sleeping arangements were shared bunk rooms with a pillow, bed pad and wool sheet, its advisable to bring your own sleeping bag/pillow/pad ect. This is definitely a huge step up from sleeping in the bush! As for the food, dinner was fair, breakfast was great! I do have some gripes which is why I did not rate this 5 stars. In my opinion the AMC has likely hired a diversity consultant. I believe that the loss of business during covid has caused a knee jerk reaction to seek new business. With the diversity mindset, it seems that the AMC has decided to express there political stance regarding inclusion with the mandatory use of "pronouns" by their staff. The staff also did skits during meals that included expressing feeling and emotions to other staff members. I wholeheartedly believe that the staff should continue (and exclusively) take a more educational approach to the wilderness on those topics ie astrology, history of the white mountains, wildlife ect would be a much better approach. Finally, I did not care for the unisex bathroom with multiple stalls. There is a very real possibility a small child and an adult of the oppisite gender will share the bathroom simultaneously. There was plenty of bathrooms to make that a non issue."

"I had a wonderful time here! Like the other huts, the croo is super positive, friendly, and dedicated to supporting respect to nature. The wake up early everyday to prepare food for the guests, introduce themselves and put on skits. Breakfast is at 7. Oatmeal with nuts and raisins on side, pancakes, eggs, and bacon. They even had a separate tray of vegan / gluten free pancakes. Real maple syrup was present along with coffee, juice (something red), water, and tea (I saw hibiscus, camomile, mint, green, Chai). Dinner started at 6. Peas, mashed potatoes, and some meat. Idk I missed this part since I arrived late and still wanted to bag galehead (so easy, 25 minutes round trip). Also, I requested a vegan meal and was provided a beautiful plate with kale, salsa, and falafel! My bunk room slept 10. Quite hours are from 9 to 5 or 6. Bathrooms were clean with soap and running water (cold) for hands, and compost toilets. There is electricity."

"Awesome watering hole for bday hikers like myself and through hikers a-like. Good cheap bites to eat and some great history. They’ve got books and games and I had to include this funny excerpt from a signing book from 1968"

"Great hut in beautiful location. Lodging closed for Covid but water available at outside spigot and snacks, coffee, and hiking assundries for sale from 11-4.(check the hours as they may change as season goes on)."
