About the Clay Meadow Trailhead
Clay Meadow Trailhead is a park and tourist attraction located on Lake Shore Drive in Bolton, New York, United States. The highlight of this institution is Tongue Mountain, which offers a breathtaking view of Lake George, one of the clearest and most beautiful lakes in the world. The water changes color as the depth increases, creating a stunning visual experience. Visitors can spot fish in the water and listen to conversations from paddlers below.
Tongue Mountain is a series of connected peaks that span nine miles along a peninsula, with Northwest Bay on the west side and the Narrows on the east. The mountain offers a challenging hike, with lean-to's available for overnight camping at Fifth Peak and Brown Mountain (no fires allowed). Visitors should be cautious of rattlesnakes in the area, although they are generally un-aggressive.
To reach Clay Meadow Trailhead, turn right on Route 9N at the northern end of the Village and follow it through Bolton Landing. The trailhead is approximately nine and a half miles from the north end of Bolton Landing, with the mountain visible on the right as you approach. While every effort is made to provide accurate information, visitors are encouraged to report any inaccuracies.

Reviews of Clay Meadow Trailhead
"Lives up to the name,clay-mud is the main crop here. I can only guess there's a shortage of maintenance crews for these trails(5th Peak and Montcalm Pt). It would explain the odd levels of grooming. Still,it IS the ADKS,so you're going to work for your views regardless. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how utterly beautiful the range at large is. It is worth visiting with the knowledge most of these trails are moderate to challenging in difficulty."
"Careful choosing your company when backpacking, if they’re in a negative headspace they’ll try to bring you down and then you’ll leave them on top of the mountain to fend for themselves."
"Small parking lot so get there early. Had to walk south on 9N for a short bit to find the trailhead. I took the Fifth Peak Lean-to trail. I thought the view was okay but not spectacular. Still a great moderate workout if you're looking for a hike that takes less than half a day."
"Beautiful trail to hang out on Black Friday. From the trailhead, we took the first right onto Northwest Bay Trail blazed with blue markers. It’s 2 miles before you reach open water but there are plenty of waterfalls, stream crossings and mossy cliffs to enjoy along the way. The trail along the shoreline has many spots to stop and view the lake. The day was rainy and 37 degrees so we didn’t hike as far as we’d wanted to but we had an amazing adventure. Parking lot fits about 8 cars."
"Enter here for the 15-mile / 6.5 hour Tongue Mountain trail loop: the most satisfying hike on Lake George. I recommend hiking clockwise (i.e bear left at the fork) and conquering the three peaks first before the long and level return along the water on the bay side. The most incredible thing about the views is that they are all of the unspoiled parts of the lake to the east. Also, it is unlikely you’ll encounter many other people even on the busiest of days, so it really feels like stepping back into the Last of the Mohicans. (Pictures are from 3 separate trips)"
