Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob Pilot Knob Road, Fort Ann, NY 12827
About the Business
The Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob is a stunning park and tourist attraction located on Pilot Knob Road in Fort Ann, New York, United States. Visitors can enjoy a moderately steep hike to the preserve's gazebo, where they can rest in the shade and take in expansive views of Lake George and the Adirondacks.
The preserve features a 0.7-mile orange trail that leads to the gazebo and scenic lookout, offering a steady ascent of 620 feet. Additionally, the blue trail offers a more gentle hike through hemlock and oak forests, leading to a waterfall loop where visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of a seasonal waterfall.
The preserve prohibits hunting and the use of motorized or non-motorized recreational vehicles, but leashed dogs are welcome. Visitors are reminded to park only in designated areas and to clean up after their pets.
Established in 2000, the 223-acre preserve was added to the list of protected lands within the Lake George basin. Originally illegally cleared and developed, the property was confiscated, resold, and eventually purchased by the Lake George Land Conservancy with the help of donors and supporters.
Named in honor of the late Lynn LaMontagne Schumann, the preserve stands as a testament to the organization's dedication to protecting the natural, scenic, historical, and recreational resources of the Lake George region. The Lake George Land Conservancy continues its mission to safeguard the water quality of Lake George and preserve the beauty of the Adirondack Park for future generations.

"Nice trail and great view from the top. We visited on Christmas and really enjoyed the hike a lot."
"It's a quick hike that is 100% all uphill to a nice view..... bring sandwiches or something to do at the top or you will wish you did.... about another 15min past the top is a nice waterfall to check out"
"Nice hike. Short but steep in spots. Lots of stone stairs. Great view of lake george. Continued on to the waterfalls. Not flowing that well (not much rain) but pretty. Must be really nice in the spring. Parking lot fills on weekends."
"(Last visited on July 17th, took in an awesome sunset!) Short and steady hike, doesn't take long to get to the gazebo. Awesome view from there, watched a plane come down for a landing on the lake! An ideal place to pack a little lunch and enjoy. Come near dusk and watch a beautiful sunset from the Gazebo--you won't regret it! We visited on May 31st and the falls were running - pretty spot to sit for a little while, too!"
"The hike is moderate, very rocky. Enjoy a great view of Lake George. After the hike, have a peaceful and relaxing time at the gazebo. You can also continue your hike to the falls. The falls do not have much water flowing during the summer."
