"Day transforms into Nightmare in White Satin: On September 1st, I watched in stunned silence as the matinee melodrama “Lady Day” unexpectedly devolved into a humorless comedy best described as “Musical Chairs” (wait for it). Due to the sound system being on a timer—it dramatically blew a fuse--Billie Holiday tramped offstage, leaving the audience to experience that vaude-villainian cliché, “a funny thing happened on the way,” sans jocularity. It became more of a behind-the-scenes set for a smokeless jazz club, during which the very talented piano player tickled the ivories and schmoozed with patrons on a (sadly) liquor-free night. The lady eventually tramped back onstage, delivering a hurried melody of Holiday hits, ending her performance with: “That’s it!” Bugs does it better. The musical chairs? I am physically challenged, and while waiting for the expected play to start, I asked for a chair to sit in. It was suggested that I ask another elderly, disabled person to vacate hers. In an effort to avoid a scene (dueling canes?), I sought out and found someone with more compassion. I sat, the “matron for the disabled” rolled her eyes, and the afternoon continued on its languid limp. That’s barn-like entertainment in New London. (Cue “Comedy Tonight,” which, ironically replaced “Love is in the Air” at “Forum,” on Broadway.) “Life imitates art, more than Art imitates Life,” or so claims Oscar Wilde."
"We love the playhouse. It's great to see live shows And our kid likes the camp"
"Great time enjoying the local playhouse theater last night. We saw Guys and Dolls and the cast was amazing!! The playhouse was updated about 1.5 years ago....and what a remarkable change...keeping the nostalgia of the interior theater the same, but expanding the grounds and remaining facility was a huge upgrade! Thank you for providing such a great spot for the community and visitors to enjoy."
