Dahl Wildlife Sanctuary 1390 White Mountain Highway, Conway, NH 03860

The Dahl Wildlife Sanctuary is a small but significant park located at 1390 White Mountain Highway in Conway, New Hampshire. This sanctuary was generously donated by Helen and Ruth Dahl in 1988 and is situated along the Saco River in the beautiful Mt. Washington Valley. It serves as a vital protection area for the Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, and White Ash floodplain forest, showcasing some of the best examples in the state.

Managed by NH Audubon, the sanctuary features a diverse range of habitats including upland pine forest, early successional forest, field, wetlands, riverine areas, and a unique cobble barren plant community. Rare plant species are actively protected and managed on the sanctuary, making it a haven for wildlife such as birds, amphibians, and mammals.

Visitors can explore the sanctuary year-round and enjoy the various trails that lead through the different habitats. The restoration efforts at the sanctuary include controlling invasive species, improving visitor services, and maintaining the diverse ecosystems. The sanctuary is also part of the NRCS's Wetland Reserve Program, ensuring its long-term conservation.

From the main trailhead at the LL Bean parking lot, visitors can embark on a loop hike that winds through restored floodplain forests and field habitats. The trail offers stunning views of the region and opportunities to observe waterbird species during the breeding season. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to globally rare plant communities such as the hudsonia-silverling river channel community, providing a unique and educational experience for visitors.
