Reviews of McLean Hospital: Klarman Eating Disorders Center
"i feel like this place saved my life. early 2022. sure there was no kitchen staff but the staff that was there did the best they could and i had the meals i needed. sure the community got worse and more tense the longer i was there but that had more to do with the individual patients not the program itself. at klarman i made some of the best human connections i could’ve made after years of isolating myself in my room. it could use some work but i am so so thankful for this place and the opportunity i was given to recover. life is better now that i stayed strong through those few months. you can’t recover unless you want to."
"My daughter was a patient at Klarman. She did not do well there, failing both inpatient and outpatient care. She did not get better until we sent her to a place in Chicago where they a completely different approach to eating disorders. At Klarman, the theoretical underpinnings of therapy seemed to be that a parent or parents were to blame. In my daughter's case, that parent was me. That accusation led to separation and eventual divorce from my wife of 35 years."
"I only lasted a week at Klarman. I knew I was not ready to give up my eating disorder but at least wanted to try. What was even harder for me was being the oldest one there and seeing girls as young as 11 years old there. I found the clinical staff to be extremely cold-hearted. The dietician got upset with me because I wanted to know what my weight was.The patients were absolutely lovely and welcoming. There was one mental health counselor who definitely shouldn’t have worked there. She would yell at the other girls and I wouldn’t stand for it anymore. Overall, I think that McLean Hospital is great but Klarman needs to step their game up."
"This place saved my life. The staff were personable and caring. The doctors were amazing. The therapy and meal plans are TOUGH but the staff works through it with you every step of the way. The groups were difficult and, of course, as was therapy but I made a huge breakthrough at Klarman. We weren’t cut off from the outside world either. At certain levels we could go on outings (whether with family, friends, significant others, or other patients at the same level) in “the real world.” Visitors were allowed, we were allowed to have our phones at specific times. Yes, this place is a hard one to be at. Yes, you will get triggered at some point. Yes, you will go through a lot of difficult emotions. But this place may very well be where you start your road to recovery. If you are looking at this review because you’re about to be admitted: You. Got. This. Do your best. Ask for help. Don’t be afraid to get honest with yourself and your medical team because will only benefit you in the end. Embrace this oppurtunity as much as you can no matter what."
"This place was absolutely awful. They told me I was at my goal weight when my previous doctors before I went said it was at the minimum of where my healthy weight was. This was very triggering. The food was awful. All frozen, packaged food and no fruits or veggies. We weren't allowed in our rooms during the day and the staff was not personable, nor did u feel like you could connect with anyone there. The first 4 days I was there I didn't even see my clinician The worst part- The staff didn't even eat with us. They ate in their office and the patients watched them THROW OUT THEIR FOOD, Very triggering. They didn't allow phones ever and they didn't allow us to call our parents. I was freaking out and having a mental breakdown one day and NO STAFF helped me. If you ever need help, Go to a residential facility, but do not go to Klarman. Disclaimer: We got to go outside a lot"
