Reviews of Russell Mill Pond and Town Forest
"Review is for avid and future Mountain Bikers. Pros: A) The ratio of hikers/dog walkers to the amount of bike hitches I see on Saturday is 20 to 1. Already a win if your only goal is to ride. B) Great single tracks. Just tight enough that no dog walkers would bother trailing it. Amazing curves, pumps, and low elevation to keep the wheels moving. Lots of roots, lots of stones, and lots of mini boost elevations on dirt. C) Sick pump, jump, and well maintained mini-trick park at the start of the route. I usually do it at the end of my run just to catch some air. Great job NEMBA and the volunteer dads sweeping and cleaning after their children finished a run. D) See attached picture. NEMBA, Pedro, and Russell Mill GETS it. Cons: A) Majority of the single track environment makes you feel like you're in a dog food commercial where they tear through the dense woods. While the scenery is intimate, so are the swarms of insects. Great if you need to fill your daily protein intake, for others, spray down. B) Humidity typhoon. Humidity is very well contained with all the foliage, it may add or subtract from your experience. C) Not a long run if you're into enduro or XC. If you ride at Middlesex Reservation, which imo is the best XC for bikers in MA, you also know that place is 3 times longer with elevation of 400 ft+. But it has nowhere NEAR the amount of fun single tracks, curves, jumps, and did I mention FUN? If you got any kind of mountain bike, why aren't you here yet?"
"Download the trail map. Waypoints are well marked. The actual trails are sort of marked, but the marker colors are a bit faded. Use tick spray."
"Stunningly beautiful. The pond was a mirror image of everything around it. Only saw one small snake other than that a beautiful light walk on this crisp fall day."
"Great hiking area, however very popular with bikes as trails are moderately challenging and rocky...bikers all very nice and willing to share the trail. Only critique is we found the trail markers lacking..."
"What an amazing gem in town. Great for hiking."
