About the Harvey Reservation
Harvey Reservation, located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, United States, is a picturesque park offering stunning views of Ipswich Bay, Crane Beach, and Plum Island. It is the perfect spot on Cape Ann to enjoy a beautiful sunset. The reservation features a short trail, a granite bench, and a great location for a seaside picnic.
Before the breakwater was built at Lane’s Cove, Indigenous people used to fish from the rocks and explore tide pools for crabs in the area. Archaeological findings have revealed artifacts dating back to the Late Archaic Period, around 5,000 years ago. The Eastern Woodland people who inhabited the region utilized the staghorn sumac for various purposes, from medicinal tea to vegetable dye. They also collected unique volcanic rocks, extracting phenocrysts and crystals like purple feldspar and olivine, which they considered magical stones. Petroglyphs carved into bedrock slabs and outcrops by Indigenous people can still be found in the area, though they are now submerged due to sea level rise.
Lane’s Cove, the main entrance to Harvey Reservation, is known as one of the smallest harbors in the Northeast. In the 1800s, it was a hub for fishing and later became renowned for granite quarrying. The breakwater was constructed to facilitate the loading of granite onto ships, and the cove served as a landing spot for vessels bringing coal to fuel the quarries. A carriage path still exists today, connecting the cove to the quarries.
The trail at Harvey Reservation winds through a coastal landscape featuring sumac, locust, cherry trees, grasses, and brambles. Visitors can observe a variety of bird species throughout the year, from winter waterfowl like eiders and loons to summer gulls, terns, and striped bass. Low tide reveals fascinating tide pools along the shore.
To access Harvey Reservation, take the 3rd exit at the rotary onto Route 127 going north, then turn left onto Duley Street. The trailhead and parking area are located 0.1 miles ahead on the left near the breakwater. Greenbelt, the organization managing the reservation, acknowledges and thanks the photographers whose work is featured on their website.
Reviews of Harvey Reservation
"Not much of a trail here. Just a small loop takes you through an old cemetery and back out to the ocean shore. During low tide, you can find ocean life in the tide pools left behind."
"Only watched the sun set did not hike trail"
"Just a great spot to hit, literally in between the granite walls lies the ocean. Great for a couple of jumps to water. At least 20' ladders are there to climb out and up."
"Beautiful & Secluded. Awesome sunsets. Residents only area. It deserves a 5***** rating however driving down is like 4 wheeling. Deep crater like potholes."
