Reviews of HarmOni Martial Arts
"Tim and his team at HarmOni have had such a positive impact on my sons life. The program is so much more than the art of karate - it's about self control, concentration, goal setting, education, being a good person, and making the right choices in life. The kids really look up to Tim and he can relate to them on every level. He's helped my son deal with bullying and talks to him 1 on 1 after class, or he lets him make up missed classes because he really cares about each individual child and wants them to succeed. He creates a sense of community with the events he does, and the fun bootcamps he has on school vacation days. I would 10/10 recommend this program to anyone!"
"We enrolled our son at Tim's dojo because he was going through a tough time and dealing with grief (our dog died and his best friend moved out of state) and it was challenging to find help for him. I figured with all the benefits I'd heard about karate, it couldn't hurt. It turned out to be better than I expected. He had his best school year ever academically and socially. I've seen a huge improvement in his self-confidence and self-esteem. He never complains about going to classes and he loves signing up for the tournaments. Karate has had such a positive impact on him that I'm planning on joining the adult classes. The staff members are professional and supportive. I highly recommend checking it out."
"About 9 months ago, I contacted AKKA Rockland about their “Little Ninjas” class for my four and six year olds. Watching the first (trial) class, I was quickly impressed with the structure. There were a couple of assistant student-instructors (teens) working alongside the main instructor, and I think when dealing with a large group of little, energy-filled people, it is essential to have enough staff to offer some small group and even one-on-one instruction. The AKKA classes are structured with that principle in mind. The kids all get the opportunity for individual attention and group dynamics, too, because there are always 2-3 assistant instructors. From seeing the first class, I knew immediately that this was a great class for my kids, and we enrolled. The Little Ninjas classes are clearly structured for the age group of the “target audience.” The classes include multiple transitions between warm ups, basic strength and cardio, foundational skills instruction, and a fun challenge activity. It keeps them engaged, even the high energy ones like my kids. AKKA makes it fun for the kids, but it also gives them age appropriate fitness and body awareness instruction. They do obstacle courses, relay races, and all kinds of cool stuff. My kids always enjoy their classes, but as a parent I have also seen how much they have learned. Beyond the obvious physical lessons of the classes, there is emphasis on developing the equally important “soft skills” involved in being a good, confident person and a productive member of a community. Self-confidence, discipline, respect, honesty, etc. are frequently discussed during the classes. I truly feel that my kids now realize that their karate goals are about more than just the physical side. While the classes themselves are well-planned and structured, the real gold of AKKA Rockland is the staff. The owner/director Tim sets a high standard by showing genuine interest in each student. He treats them as individuals, and connects with them in different ways. He collaborates with parents to help develop his students both in the dojo and everywhere else in the world. When the students aren’t upholding the standards, he does address it, and he expects them to do better. Sometimes, that means that the student doesn’t earn the week's belt stripe, but Tim always helps the kids to reframe the temporary failure as an opportunity to do better, and when they do better, he is the first to celebrate their success. Both of my kids have a high level of respect for Tim because he shows such respect for them and sets high standards for his students. Tim’s leadership and the values of AKKA Rockland are also quite evident when you observe the student assistants at work. These teens have impressed me in innumerable ways. As someone who works in a local high school, I am familiar with teens. The student assistants at AKKA Rockland are incredibly impressive teens. They demonstrate excellent work ethic, commitment, kindness, and amazing confidence. They engage with the younger children and serve as excellent role models. They show the qualities that we’d all look for in our future employees. I genuinely believe that AKKA Rockland has played a big role in developing these qualities in these impressive teens. I am thrilled to have them as role models for my own children, and I am hopeful that AKKA Rockland will help my children to develop into people of equally impressive character one day."
"My daughter is 6 years old and she has been attending the Little Ninjas Class at AKKA Rockland for about a year now. We couldn’t be happier with the program. Tim, the owner and chief instructor, takes time to give feedback and pays attention to every single child based on their individual needs. He will sit down and talk with a child and/or parent as needed to explain and give feedback on skills, behavioral issues or praise for good performance. The classes are well structured. Teaching about respect and discipline is just as important part of the classes as the physical training and skills. My daughter enjoys the class every single time she goes, and she loves all the instructors. I would highly recommend AKKA Rockland to everybody. It really holds up to its promise: “Skills for life”."
"Highly recommend Rockland AKKA! Our daughter has tried various sports and activities, and nothing caught her interest like Kempo Karate. She enjoys working towards her individual goals within AKKA, instead of a "scoring goal" type of sport. Tim, the director/Owner of the Rockland branch is awesome with the kids. Compassionate, enthusiastic, all while teaching discipline, respect, and a skill set that they will have forever. The Junior Instructors are great with the kids, help guide them, and excel in their training, as well as their confidence/self esteem. The kids really enjoy going to class, and look up to all of them. Going on two years, our daughter has come out of her shell, advanced into the Junior Instructor training course, and hasnt lost any momentum in her goals with AKKA. She still loves it! It has done wonders for her, keeps her physically active, and away from screen time! We are so proud of her, and so happy she has found a place at the Rockland Akka."
