Reviews of Len Brassard's Family Martial Arts Center
"My son is taking classes w them since he was 4. He is 11 now. Thisxis a good place to bring kids in the spectrum. So happy w all of the staff. Kindness, respect and understanding!!!"
"Love these people! I grew up with some karate, (green belt in Shotokan). My oldest (11) and I have always done some semi structured fighting at home. As he's gotten older it was time to get more serious about it, following his interest. We did some YouTube classes together. But it was time to get formal training. So we looked into the options in town. Went to see the taekwondo place. Did really like them. And came to see FMAC in person as well. They took us right in and had us blocking pads and running up and down the mat. Very engaging demonstration. Jumped right in talking about character development and life skills. Just the kind of thing I was looking to hear. Owner is a PhD in psychology I believe. And he lectures the family class on B days about all these deep character development life skill subjects. Very fundamental things about how to live life. American Kenpo is not sport karate. It's self defense and fighting in real life situations. The style is taught through "forms" (katas) and "techniques", which are scripted series of moves to do in scripted situations, with the intention of leaving the person immobilized very quickly, and allowing you to get away. Everything beginning with a defensive posture, this is not aggressive fighting. Beginning with grab response, and moving to live attacks as you advance. So, like, one from the first round is, person grabs both your wrists from behind. You pull forward into a left neutral bow, pulling them forward, then launch back with a right outward elbow to the face, knocking them back. As they fall you throw their wrist down, bending them over, and you come up with a knee to the solar plexus. Person ends up on the ground. You practice with each other. One person running "dummy role". These are powerful combinations that include lots of arm breaks and brainstem attacks, and you can't use this in situations where you care what happens to the other person. Not playing around. The forms are much more straight forward than other styles of karate. They're not "pretty". It's like, "here's all the moves you can do in this class of move". It's training each of the means of attack or defense into your muscle memory. So that when the fight doesn't go as planned, your body knows what to do from any angle. It teaches form. How to settle into each stance, arm landing when the feet stop. How to get each move just right. They get you doing it, and then they come around and tweek it, and you listen and get better and better. The character of the place. First. Very kind, very respectful. They understand how brains learn and how people flourish, and their behavior is very distinctly tuned to that. You say sir or ma'am if you are spoken to, both as a group and individual. If you notice people doing awesome you tell them and you give them high fives. We do the student creed every day. Part one through 3 all together, and part 4, repeat after me at the end of class. They pick different people to lead it at the end of class. There's nothing like seeing some 7 year old otherwise shy kid get up in front of the whole class and rock it. Very positive environment, full of praise and respect. They teach a mastery class (for more money). Most of us end up in it. Cause it's good. Extra 15 min at the end of class going over either, cool stuff like sticks, or leadership training. It's an educational component. In the family class, that's the lectures I talked about above. In the adult class it's different. There's reading homework, and questions on it. And we do leadership training, getting up in front of everybody and teaching techniques or basics. It's teaching how to teach, and teaching how to get up in front of a group and speak. It's a really gentle environment for it. I stutter. I'm better now than I used to be, I can get by day to day without people noticing. But there's no way I get through a thing like that without stuttering. And it's totally fine, I feel 100% safe with everybody involved and it's really good experience for me. Any shy kid or adult would benefit greatly."
"I did it! I passed. Just a FYI this is going to get really sappy. When the girls were invited to a Karate Birthday party I was like, heck yes we'll join these kids need some discipline! They did a couple weeks solo. I decided shortly after that it looked like a great time and joined my self. Slowly but surely I have found who I really am. I have lost weight. I have lost the fear of failure. I have gained an immense amount of confidence. Self assuredness. New friends. People I count imagine my life without now. With this red stripe I now know the real me. I am happy, confident in my self and body. I'm so proud of the person I am becoming. With this stripe brings an Orange belt and a whole new world. I can't wait for what the future holds."
"FMAC is one of the best decisions I have made for my son. This facility stresses manners and respect for others. It has helped my son become more confident in himself and his want to help others. If up to me this program would be mandatory for all children. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the instructors."
"I first started training at FMAC when I was in college and going through a tough time in my life. I was going through anxiety and depression. While training with the wonderful staff at FMAC I became more confident in myself and my abilities and they encouraged me in such a way that I was able to step out of my comfort zone and became an assistant teacher and eventually moved on to leading classes by myself. This experience was like no other and I truly believe that it helped me with the confidence that I have today as an adult and with my job. I look forward to sending my kids to FMAC in the future!"
