Previously I have had good luck hiring computer techs who advertised on Craigslist. This was the exception. My experience was not happy. What needed to be done: I find that periodically I need someone knowledgeable to update my computer’s virus and other malware protections and to insure the computer is updated with whatever software/protections and any performance issues, like slow loading, are addressed.. I also had purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 5 and wanted everything including all files copied and set up from my Laptop to my new SP so that I could start using that as my primary computer. So I developed a list of tasks to be completed by the computer guy and sent that list to everyone who responded. The list, is ½ page typewritten. I asked this computer guy to make sure he could address all the issue. He assured me he could. Here’s how he failed while still charging a hefty fee for his services. From the start there was a disconnect between what the post listed as his services and what the person who showed up seemed to able to provide. 1. Update protections on both computers. Fix error messages and anything slowing laptop down My experience has always been that the first thing a computer consultant does is to check out performance and protections to determine what is lacking and should be added. White failed to address this issue. He checked to see if I had Windows Defender, which I did, and his only other suggestion was to add a malware program that I had to pay for. He did nothing to diagnose the slow loading and other error messages I was receiving on the laptop. After 2 and 1 half hours when I told him to leave nothing was done to fix these problems. 2. Fix Firefox issues on both laptop and SP. He didn’t seem to be familiar with Firefox and could offer no suggestions on fixing the problems I raised (including slow loading pages). He also failed to transfer my bookmarks to the SP Firefox. 3. Set up SP. Including transferring all files. a. Files to Transfer All Microsoft Office, Adobe, Thunderbird including messages, Coffee Cup, Firefox b. Set up emails for (my email address) on SP and make sure working okay on laptop c. Set up Carbonite on SP and make sure working okay on laptop also that automatic on both. d. Set up wireless connection to Surface for both printers. When I asked him to leave, there were no files transferred to the SP, Carbonite hadn’t been set up, no files had been transferred, and neither printer was connected. Nor, except for Microsoft Office which he downloaded from the web, something I could actually do myself, were any of the other listed programs and their content transferred. I use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email program. While he did download the right program to the SP he failed to connect the interface so that I could use the program with my online email provider. So it is essentially useless. We went round and round. He insisted that he couldn’t transfer the messages from one computer to the other except one at a time. I have watched enough people over the years address this problem to know that someone with experience can do what I wanted. Plus failing to set up a way for me to actually use the program is inexcusable. Finally, There was no sense of wanting to provide good customer service or caring. He offers a Senior Discount on his site and didn’t give it to me."
