Reviews of Carmelina's
"After 1.5 months of waiting, the day of my reservation for the ever-so-popular Carmelina's finally arrived. Doors opened right at 11:30 AM, and we were seated promptly after confirming our reservation (note: I like to dine solo, but this place has a 2-person minimum). A line had formed outside because they only hold your table for 10 minutes and kick you out after 90 minutes, so no one wanted to be late. The place was smaller than expected, with tables packed tightly together, which is typical of restaurants in the North End. They have a QR code at every table to scan for the menu. You must order everything upfront. Because of the small space, the smoke from the kitchen burned our eyes as we waited for our food. However, the appetizers and then the main course all came out within 20ish minutes, served in the pans in which they were cooked. We also got complimentary bread with olive oil to start. - Complimentary bread with olive oil: The bread was warm and crunchy. Not bad but also nothing special. - Risotto Milanese: Good portion size for $10; enough to share between two people. It was creamy and almost tasted like clam chowder. - Sunday Macaroni: HUGE portion size, packed with protein. For $38, it was well worth two meals. The whipped ricotta and meatballs were my favorite parts. The whipped ricotta was so fluffy and added a light creaminess. The meatball was very soft and flavorful. The beef rib slipped off the bone, but the meatier part was a bit overcooked and dry. The Sulmona sausage was thick but too chewy for my liking. The penne and sauce were fine but plain. - Frutti di Mare: Also HUGE. Great variety of fresh seafood that was cooked well. There was an even ratio of sauce to pasta to seafood. The pasta was soft, and the sauce was light and sweet. We didn't have any direct issues with the service, but we were a bit shocked at how they treated the table next to us, which put a bit of a damper on the meal. Overall, it was a very filling meal that gives a great bang for your buck, but relative to how hard it was to get a reservation, I have had better meals in Boston. I do appreciate that they accept credit cards (except for Discover), as most places in the North End are cash-only. Note that they charge a 3% kitchen appreciation fee. I would come back, but it's not a place for which I would be rushing to get another reservation."
"This restaurant served the best Italian food I’ve ever had in the United States. I went here on the recommendation of some friends, and it’s probably the best they’ve ever made! It’s a small restaurant, which makes for a very intimate dining experience, but it also means you need to try to get reservations as far in advance as possible. I had the Meatballs as an appetizer, and the Chicken Parmesan as my main; both items were the best I’ve ever had, respectively. The portions are very big, so you definitely won’t leave hungry. The restaurant has a strict time limit on entry and exit, but personally, I see that as a positive - - if they didn’t operate this way, far fewer people would be able to experience this wonderful culinary experience. They happily make recommendations for dessert options, nearby, as well, if you are interested in continuing to socialize. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, and I only hope that I have enough advance notice of my future trips to Boston to allow me to get reservations!"
"Carmelina’s was cute and cozy, and their espresso martini packed a punch, but the food was so-so. My pasta felt like it skipped a grade in "chew school," and the lasagna, while generous, tasted a bit flat. It was still a decent night, but not enough to win my heart – or stomach – for a return trip. If you're down for some vibes and a strong drink, sure, check it out. But if you're chasing Italian magic, keep walking!"
"Carmelina's was a perfect place to grab lunch after spending my morning walking The North End. I did not have a rsvp but a spot for one was available, and I was seated. The host was also a waiter and he was amazing, everyone at Carmelina's is so nice. I was seated at the bar that overlooks the Chefs while they make those delicious meals. They move quietly, quickly and just like two well oiled machines, dishes come out fast. I ordered the garlic shrimp and it was a burst of flavor. The shrimp were fresh and tender but not overcooked, the pasta perfection in every bite. The buttery, white wine sauce was seasoned just right. I also grabbed a salad that could have been shared by 2-3 people. It was fresh and crunchy. The service was top and prompt. I went two days in a row, it was that good, made a reservation for the second day though. The space is small so be mindful of people. It's definitely on my list to return to on my next Boston Vacation. Pictures are from both days."
"Small eatery with impressive menu. We had the usual fried calamari and was pleasantly surprised by its quality: light and delicate. We had two different pasta, both excellent. But the memorable one was the short ribs over yellow risotto. The flavor was so well balanced yet rich and intense. It’s definitely worth a visit."
