Boston Lyric Opera

"Anyone discrediting arts venues after 2 years of COVID should be pilloried. Especially the shills who are pushing their own opera companies - bad form. Boston Lyric Opera appears to be struggling, as are so many non-profits, but I wish them well. I have seen some marvelous operas there with very strong singers, and hope they return to their former health in 2022-2023."

"Not the opera company we want, but it’s what we’ve got. In an uninspired and lackluster community of opera companies BLO is possibly the better choice of the bunch in the Greater Boston area, at least making a laudable (if not achievable) effort at a quality production. For those exploring opera BLO is a great place to test the waters and get some basic education, for opera lovers and aficionados the distractions of vocalists who never matured beyond the student-level can quickly become overwhelming to the point of dreading the next time one opens their mouth. While resumes overflow with workshops, festivals and competitions none of them equate to being qualified to lead a cast. My recommendation - put half the effort into finding quality voices as you put into distracting the audience from voices through staging and dancers and perhaps Boston can have a serious opera community one day."

"The BLO was never World Class; however, while it was housed in the Schubert , some of the Operas were excellent in terms of production, variety and quality. Now it has slid downhill from the mid-point, homeless and productions we have never heard of before. Who really wants to wander all over the city to hear mediocre Operas in whichever Venue offers the least expensive cost?"
