Reviews of Tres Gatos
"Love it here!! The food is incredible and the service is nice and accommodating. Everything is shareable and they are really on top of dietary restrictions. The Brussels sprouts, chickpea fritters, deviled eggs and lamb burger were my favorite items but you cannot go wrong. It is a super cozy atmosphere as it is a small space- I highly recommend making a reservation. There’s a record store in the back to check out while you wait!"
"TL;DR: Ambiance was great, service was good, food was bad (extremely salty, churros served raw). Save your money and don’t go here! I honestly can’t believe this place has such good reviews. I’d been wanting to try Tres Gatos since I moved to JP a few months ago because I’d only heard great things. Unfortunately it did not live up to the hype at all. It’s a nice cozy space with small tables and friendly staff. The music was slightly loud but we were able to talk mostly comfortably. Our server gave us good advice on how much to order, and we ended up going with the tomato salad, the lentils, the mussels, and a small vegetable paella (which was the perfect amount for two). The tomato salad was nice and fresh and I appreciated the labneh, but it was way too salty. The lentils were literally just boiled lentils with an egg yolk and shishito relish on top (didn’t add much flavor), and the only thing you could taste was (too much) salt. The mussels were good but basically just mussels cooked in a simple red curry sauce that could’ve been from a jar. But the worst offender was the paella: it was cooked in a tomato sauce reminiscent of marinera and didn’t taste like paella at all, it was way too wet which meant it didn’t have any crispy edges, and of course it was over salted (notice a theme here?). To make matters worse, the only vegetables in it were peas, extremely tough green beans (like chewing construction paper), and a few slices of radish place delicately on top (??). I feel bad for our poor server who kept having to come over to refill our water glasses because of the extreme amount of salt in everything. Finally, we decided to order the only dessert on the menu, churros with chocolate sauce, because we wanted a break from the salt. The chocolate sauce was great but the churros were completely raw on the inside (literally batter except for a hard shell on the outside). The worst part is that when we called our server over to send the churros back, they said, “Yeah, that happens sometimes” and immediately removed it from our bill. HELLO?? If you’re consistently serving raw churros to customers, especially at such a high priced restaurant, they absolutely shouldn’t be on the menu! The only reason Tres Gatos is getting 2 stars is because of the service and atmosphere. Even if this was an off night, I can’t imagine the food quantity would bounce back so quickly to how it appears in other reviews. Please save your hard earned money and don’t go here."
"Cute space with delicious food! The positives - the food was really well done, great options. The drinks were also very well made, I think my mezcal based drink was fantastic. The salted watermelon drink was also great. The chickpea fritters were delicious, and the mussels were made in this beautifully made broth. The negatives - service and space. I get it - you have to maximize space and this place was BUSY. that being said we were seated in front of the kitchen on their high tables which would normally be fine but their AC/ventilation was just not strong enough to counteract the heat in there. Secondly the service - they were busy, but at multiple times they just forgot our order. We had to remind them we had orders that we were waiting for, which again, I get you're busy but I shouldn't have to chase you down for the food we're expecting. All in all a cute spot with great and reasonably priced food. I would say book the low top tables unless it's winter and you want to be HOT."
"For my birthday dinner this year, my boyfriend made a reservation at Tres Gatos to celebrate. I had never been, but have had it as a bucket list place for many years and was excited to go. We were seated immediately, given a low table by the window which was perfect, and our server came by immediately with water and menus. We settled on a small paella and three tapas items (asparagus, patatas and garlic shrimp) and ordered two surprise mocktails. The food was delicious, the asparagus came in a sauce I couldn’t stop eating and the paella was beautifully presented and so tasty we ate every morsel! However, the star of the night was our server Cameron. He went above and beyond making my night feel special and celebratory, even making sure I had a candle to make a wish upon. Regardless of the food, we will definitely frequent Tres Gatos because of Cameron!! It takes a very special person to create an atmosphere where customers feel welcomed, seen and genuinely celebrated. Thank you, Cameron, for making my birthday this year so special!!!"
"Oh my gosh the food here was delicious! This is in my top 3 favorite tapas places I’ve eaten at in Boston. I loved the decor inside, small but a really fun atmosphere. The tortilla Española was my absolute favorite and the roasted beet salad is a must! All of the drinks were delicious and the smoked fruit in them made them a little extra special. The book and record store was great to browse before/after the meal. I definitely recommend making a reservation or showing up early to make sure you can get a table outside!"
