"This is something that happened 8 years ago and still shocks me to this day. I want to share my story to prevent anyone else from dealing with this. I signed a lease agreement in July 2013 for one year. In November of that year I found out my mum was diagnosed with cancer. I decided to move back to Canada to be with her for treatment. I paid my rent up until January 2014. I contacted Tousley to see if I could terminate my lease early, they said I would have to find someone to take over my lease so that's what I did. I found a classmate to move in for the remainder of my lease. Stupidly I did not get anything in writing and that boned me. For the remainder of the 6 months of my lease I lived in Canada and was helping my mum recover from her lobectomy. Then I was diagnosed with cancer in May 2014 and went through my own surgeries and treatment. Once I finally had recovered from my surgeries, I contacted Tousley about not receiving my rent deposit back. They then told me I would not be receiving it because the person who took over my lease was not paying. I was never notified of this by anyone at Tousley that the payments were passed due. They said those payments were my responsibility and yet they never tried to contact me. I had no knowledge that rent wasn't being paid. I understood that the payments were my responsibility but Tousley had responsibility to contact me as the lessee to notify of late rent payments which they never once did. If I had known I would have tried to resolve the situation, even though I was going through health issues. I was made to feel by the staff that I was a delinquent for not paying. Even though I had no idea of the issue and was in Canada taking care of not only my mother but going through cancer treatment myself. At the end of the day I didn't pursue fighting with them because I was still going through cancer treatment."
