"Beautiful restaurant, Japanese interiors, coy pond and fountain, waitresses wearing kimonos, private booth. That adds a lot to the experience. We went there for dinner on a winter Saturday night, two couples. The food was good and nicely plated, the prices were high but fair, considering the quality of the restaurant. The main downside is the rush. It started with the revolving water fountain in the vestibule. Instead of flowing slowly to create a relaxing atmosphere, it revolves fast and gushes water loudly. Then in the booth, the waitress was in a hurry to take orders, to remove dishes even when not fully eaten, and to bring us the bill at the end. We paid and then stayed a bit longer to talk, we did not order dessert or tea since the check had been closed. I did not appreciate the wipes they serve with the meal. Those are very bad for the environment, not biodegradable. I'd rather use the napkins and wash my hands in the restroom. I understand they need to make money and clear tables, but when paying around $50 pr person- you want to enjoy and take your time. Perhaps it's more relaxed on weekdays. Good restaurant, enjoy !"
"This was the first time that I saw a sukiyaki like this: it was served in a bowl with twisted cooked wagyu, different from other restaurants where sukiyaki is typically offered a pot with raw wagyu served separately on a plate. This cooking style makes the wagyu being somewhat overcooked. The server told us it is supposed to be like this and if we want a pot then we should order double portions and pay double price. But I don’t believe this is the authentic cooking style and I have also been to many restaurants including Momokawa at NYC which offer pots and plates of wagyu for even one person’s portion. Not to say we have paid $50 for two persons’ portions. Their unagi is good, but also expensive ($35)."
"With its kimono-wearing servers and private booths, Fugakyu aims to create an atmosphere that closely mirrors an authentic Japanese private dining experience. However, during my recent Friday night visit, the food didn't quite match the impressive setting, feeling overpriced for its average quality. From the appetizers, my friend and I shared the Geso Age and Seafood Tempura. The tempura was mediocre, but thankfully, the Geso Age was encased in a delightfully crispy batter, offering a satisfyingly chewy texture that became the highlight of the meal. For entrées, we chose the Unaju and the FugaKyu Boat. The Unaju, a tender BBQ eel over rice, was enjoyable. However, Fugakyu Boat was quite disappointing. Despite its elaborate presentation, some sushi pieces hadn't been properly thawed, leading to an off-putting texture and excess moisture. While FugaKyu delivers an engaging ambiance that might intrigue those new to Japanese private dining, the food was underwhelming overall. For a restaurant striving to offer an authentic Japanese experience, the quality of the food should match the level of its atmospheric authenticity. Would probably not come back."
"A surprisingly fun place for a large group in Boston. The food was good. Definitely do family-style to get good value here; the dish prices vary widely."
"We had a good experience in our private booth. It was disappointed the tv didn’t work and it could get hot in there so we needed to have the door open some times. It wasn’t hard to hit the minimum for our booth with the menu prices. Our server Julie was great, she was so friendly and made great suggestions for food and drinks."
