Reviews of The Summer House Cottages
"The summerhouse is definitely an interesting place but I would not recommend to stay here again. 1. No one is ever at the check in, and it's very bizarre how the staff operates. 2. Moved our rooms without telling us, then when we tried to check in (we were there 2:40 for 3 pm check in) there was no one, the chef tried to take us to our room , people were in there. It was bizarre and unprofessional. 3. Things were dirty around the cottages, including the pool 4. Rooms are small and no customer care"
"Pros: Nice, quiet part of the island. Off-site manager attempted to make ammends for shameful conditions. Cons: Yick. The first thing I said when we walked on the property was, "What happened here?" I've seen long-ruined seaside inns of the 19th century, but it is fascinating to come to one which is in the midst of falling from grace. We came here the third week of July, which we were told by friends of the owner was "off season." The restaurant, bar, seaside bar, and pool were all closed (no warning given at time of booking in December, nor was it communicated in the one other communication the day before our arrival), and there was trash on all but two outdoor tables. On the surface our room was lovely, but a closer look revealed all of our glasses were dirty, our ice bucket full of mold (there was nowhere to actually get ice), the soap and finishes in the bathroom were dirty, and our mattress had some animal's waste and woodchips on it (we would tell something was off because the sheets were so thin we could see the shadows of something under there). We called in advance to say we were on the 5 p.m. ferry so we would not make the 3-5 checkin time, but there was no one around to greet us. They had a third party call service, no customer service on site, and I had to text some number a call service agent gave us just share the state of our room. They sent us a bottle of champagne and upgraded our room to a suite for the second day of our suite. An amazing gesture. The suite was cutely furnished, but smelled of noxious fumes, and I awoke to a bed bug on my pillow. Lifting up the sheets, there were the tell-tale rust stains and black waste in the seams of the mattress. My general assessment: If your family makes under $200K and and you want to treat yourselves to a pricey vacation, your money goes nowhere here, and you will likely end up as disappointed as myself and my husband. If you have the means to blow $1K+ a night on a poor vacation investment, have at it; you'll at least be on a quieter side of the island with great beaches."
"This place falls well short of expectations. $1,000 a night for a cramped, dirty room with no refrigerator and cable that didn’t work. We arrived after normal check-in time, I called ahead and received a voicemail from the caretaker saying that would be fine, but without leaving any instructions whatsoever. We arrived and found a ghost town, no staff, and an empty, closed, half-finished restaurant. Turns out we came on a weekend where the restaurant, pool, and bar were all closed, without warning (in July!?). We called the number and left a message with their answering service. Then we wandered around asking construction workers if any staff were around and they all said they didn’t know, until a nice gentleman who said he was friends with the owner said we could go ahead into the Barclay room. There we found what looked like bed bugs on the mattress, black mold in the ice bucket, and a shower with two heads where, of course, only the smaller one worked.. at low pressure. Not to mention dirty glasses, grimy toothbrush holders, and a sinking feeling while pondering the $2,000 we wasted for two nights. We eventually heard back from the caretaker, who comped us a $30 bottle of champagne and said tomorrow we would get a new room. The next day we went to the Sweet Pea suite. While it was more spacious and actually had a fridge, this time there were disgusting cabinets, ants on the floor, and the cable still didn’t work. The whole experience left me feeling like I was not a valued guest putting down hard earned money to take my wife on a special vacation, but just a number in their bank account. For the past week I’ve been trying to get a hold of the caretaker, left several messages at the main number and was told to call her number directly. When I call her, I leave polite messages which never get returned. I kept hearing about how Leo stayed here, about how Billy Joel played piano in the same restaurant that now had cordless tool batteries charging on the empty bar. It only made me feel more like a nuisance for wishing I could experience 1/1,000th the time they must’ve had. 2 stars because the beach was beautiful. There are beautiful beaches everywhere, though."
"My friends and I stayed at the Summer House Cottages this summer and had a tremendous weekend. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the staff could not have been nicer. Public beaches can be hard to access on the island sometimes without a rental car or public transportation, so having the pool and beach right nearby was a great bonus. We had some of the best food on the island at the Summer House Beachside Bistro everyday and dined at the more formal Summer House Restaurant at night. Can't wait to go back next summer!"
"The cottages are lovely! My four friends and I stayed at the Grey Lady cottage and it satisfied all our needs; it had the perfect amount of space for sleeping, a nice kitchen and living room area, and every part was super cozy. Plus, the decor is absolutely adorable on the inside and outside. The staff is awesome; they are supper accommodating and welcoming. The cottages are nice and secluded from the others, so we had a little outdoor area to put our beach stuff , and there's great little pathway that leads you right down to the beach and to the Summer House restaurant. I would highly recommend staying here!"
