Reviews of Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center
"For breast cancer, as much as possible and suitable in your situation, please look into and meet with specialists at other centers before starting treatment here for your high-risk case. When it came to the critical PATHOLOGY department and its wholly dependent MEDICAL ONCOLOGY department, the breast center at JHH did not meet community hospitals' care let alone what one hopes for when coming to an academic research center. Having gone through all steps, there are errors and systematic gaps at every step of the pathology system at JHH from the top-down, from multiple leaders' scientific attitudes to clerical and administrative errors and delays, which lead to harm. If leaders prioritize 'just-get-it-done' and checking-off the minimums over thorough tissue sampling, best practices, details, and accuracy, errors are bound to happen, and it's all for nothing. Both pathology and medical oncology departments flouted national standards of care pertaining to certain tests and treatment plans that other hospitals did not. There were errors and lower standards than expected from immediate post-op tissue handling to testing to diagnosis. JHH actively inhibits pathology send-out for a second-opinion by making medical oncologists not free to offer it to a patient and to initiate that themselves as some outside institutions require which causes diagnostic gaps leading to preventable, very unfortunate, and unforgivable delays in starting post-operation medical therapy --- delay in initiating systemic therapy directly affects survival rates. A directorial level MD of the hospital-wide surgical pathology department was dismissive and only quickly shifted to agreeing to send-out materials when they heard there was over a month of delay in sending out unstained slides and all materials as formally requested by patient which made it impossible for the second institution to conduct critical diagnostic verification that would prevent wrong treatment. Research institutions track their times to consults and treatments that this center does not seem to track or ensure. The dynamics between the specialties at this center are also strange, dysfunctional, unprofessional, and seemingly inspire fear and lack of agency among MDs with less seniority. Sadly these issues irreversibly harm women. First steps matter a lot-- you learn this only after going through it all for the first time, coming from outside the medical sphere as a layman. You have one shot to stop the disease if you detect cancer early. Cancer cannot be addressed without utmost seriousness and attention to detail for every process-- each successive process hinges on the previous, leading to life or death, endless suffering or freedom from suffering. It is worth going two hours away to other leading centers for the sake of saving life and sparing suffering because of missteps made at the first hospital where you receive care which perhaps should not be Hopkins. With all due respect for Hopkins MDs' time and effort, it felt as if the hospital and some specialists cared more for projecting super-specialization and advertising/duping vulnerable new patients through the website than thinking of the woman when they look under the microscope. If all JHH breast center MDs don't stick their necks out to challenge existing processes and less-scientific dogma and attitudes to create drastic improvements, they will simply continue to pass the buck and responsibility to other specialists at the patient's expense. For instance, speaking of entrenched dogma that is pushed at this center, exercise is a scientifically unproven treatment plan-- at best it is a complementary therapy, scientifically refuted by studies as a cure and thus deplorable to prescribe as the sole therapy to helpless patients who depend completely on treatment MDs authorize. Early detection means nothing if it's not top of mind for specialists to ensure greatest care for details in order to safely prevent metastatic disease for a cancer such as breast cancer which is far more curable than many other cancers."
"I cannot adequately express just how much the nurses, techs, etc, at the outpatient infusion center, mean to my family. After two years of treatment; sometimes bi-weekly and often, daily, visits with my son, he didn’t get the cure we had hoped for, but the kindness, professionalism and dedication of the nurses and techs made the journey bearable. They always had a smile, were unfailingly patient, respectful and just as optimistic for a good outcome as we were. They celebrated good results and sympathized with bad ones. This journey would have been impossible without them."
"I am appalled at the lack of care and concern the medical staff demonstrate for their patients here. It is a maze of confusion to navigate this system. My mother is a 92 year-old woman diagnosed with bone cancer, and the way the medical staff has communicated with me about her care has been cold, robotic, inefficient, and not empathetic in any way. Her surgeon is highly skilled, so he will be performing her surgery, but after that, we will be definitely be going elsewhere!!!!"
"My sister is in their Oncology ICU unit right now. I cannot say ENOUGH good things about her medical team. They are awesome! After dealing with incompetent and uncaring hospitals like Southern M.D. hospital this place is like club med! Thank you Dr. Weiss and all ur interns. I KNOW my sister is in good hands!"
"My husband and I unfortunately have been to many hospitals over the years, I feel I could write a travel guide book to the best ones and what they offer. John Hopkins is number one In my book. They were quick to admit him, manage the symptoms and kind to both him and I. We were humans. I truly appreciate the kindness and how thorough the staff was. Emily C"
