Reviews of Southwest Leadership Academy Charter School
"This school is absolutely terrible. Bottom of the barrel terrible. Their only focus is testing and improving test scores, yet the kids are still doing terrible on these state exams. They like to threaten the kids about going to a public school but their scores and everything else is on the same level as the public schools. These students aren’t learning anything either. The teachers aren’t there to teach the students and it shows. There’s only a handful of good teachers. The principal and Dean are even worse. All I can say is save yourself the time and send your children to a school that actually cares about their education and well being. If I there was an option for 0 stars that’s exactly what I would’ve given."
"This is a great school, the staff and administration try their best to shape the children in the best possible form. Though it's in a neighborhood where it makes it hard to live a dream like other suburban schools, the challenges and oppositions will arise. All of my three kids attended there K-8, and good, as well as excellent teachers have come through those walls. It is a no nonsense tolerance school. At least, it's in our neighborhood, lets give it all that it needs. True leadership starts from here!!!"
"My daughter started SLA in kindergarten 2016 it was an awesome experience with Mr. Evans as principal the following year in first grade was a new principal was challenging in the hopes for the school to go into a different direction As we were told later that year we found out as the children were going to second grade said they were going to have a slight school we were informed that the school was going to be at a different location than where it was which was horrible the location was on 69th and Woodland Avenue next to the homeless shelter the parent was a form of a few weeks before school started that’s a children ages K through second grade will be attending the side school there was no lunch room no room for the children to grow. Although in the beginning it was a great school great atmosphere last year that was it for me they’re always teaching the children math and nothing else The principal is very hard to get along with the board I really don’t have any words to say it’s sad because you try to help your community the best way you can but for me it was a very awful experience we decided to pull my daughter this year for several reasons because I feel as though if I stayed it would be a serious issue with the staff which is very rude and they did not talk to the parents in a professional way and then get upset when you lash back at them the same way that you were talk to there’s a lot of favoritism within the school which is not right it’s just not a very good atmosphere it’s a lot of deceit and lies within a school and trust me the teachers are very unprofessional. My experience with my daughters new school is wonderful he has a line of communication and respect between the teacher and the parent. That’s my biggest problem there is no respect so please do your research before you decide to send your child to a charter school or children make sure it’s a fit for you and your Family"
"Things have truly spiraled downhill since Mr. Evans and other staff left. The current staff needs more training. How is it a school is looking to expand when for two years in a row, school had to be closed due to no heat. This is truly an example of poor planning and possible misuse of funds. The dean needs to be retrained and advised that our children are not criminals and should be treated as future leaders as the name of the school states. I am thankful to God, that this is my children's last year there."
"My daughter only attended 1st grade for a week before I transferred her to a school she's been on the waiting list for. Her teacher and assistant teacher seemed awesome, but administration is new and things were unorganized. I The music program is commendable and I love that they have gym. I understand they are in transition, with K-3 at a temporary building, but I felt like parents were being policed, not allowed to walk children to their class to view their classroom environment and meet the teachers. They claim they had issues with parents roaming the halls, which would've been resolved with a staff escort. I would have to wait a month later to meet the teachers during Back to School Night. My daughter had to use the bathroom when I picked her up and I couldn't even walk her in. The teachers had to stay with the children until their parents picked them up, so we had to go elsewhere, risking an accident, for her to use the bathroom. The administrators didn't do their part regarding the school bus situation so that delayed my daughter getting picked up. When I transferred, SW claims they didn't get the faxed request to end enrollment, and when the new school called, they said I had to sign a form, which the current school said I didn't have to do that; they can just complete a form to end enrollment. This school would improve with proper training of new administration , organization and an open door policy for parents wanting to visit their children's classrooms."
