About the Natural Lands' ChesLen Preserve
Located at 1199 Cannery Road in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, the Natural Lands' ChesLen Preserve is the largest privately owned nature preserve open to the public in Chester County. Visitors can explore miles of marked hiking trails that wind through shady woodlands, flower-filled meadows, farm fields, and stream valleys. The Ollie Owl’s NaturePlayGround is a highlight for young explorers, where they can climb logs, build stick tee-pees, hunt for bugs, and get a little dirty while gaining an appreciation for nature.
History buffs will appreciate the Star Gazers’ Stone, a reference point placed by surveyors and astronomers Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in 1763 to mark the astronomical meridian line. The preserve was once part of a 17,000-acre tract owned by the legendary King Ranch, known for grazing cattle on the lush fields. Visitors can also discover a small cemetery that is a remnant of the Chester County Poorhouse, which operated as a refuge for orphans and indigent adults.
ChesLen Preserve is dedicated to saving open space, caring for nature, and connecting people to the outdoors. The organization relies on volunteers to help with conservation efforts, including a special event on MLK Day of service. Stroud Preserve, another important natural area managed by Natural Lands, consists of 571 acres of culturally and ecologically significant land in Chester County.
For a truly immersive experience in Pennsylvania's natural beauty, a visit to Sadsbury's deep forests is like stepping back in time. Whether you're a nature lover, history enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, ChesLen Preserve offers something for everyone. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this unique destination and support the important conservation work of Natural Lands.

Reviews of Natural Lands' ChesLen Preserve
"We had a beautiful hike from the parking area down towards the creek. It was spacious and beautiful and not too long for a hot day. We were there during an event where there was beer for sale and a cornhole setup. Fun day."
"This part of the Natural Lands Preserve has an information kiosk with a map of the entire Preserve. I was shocked when I opened it and discovered the enormity of the Preserve. It, as well as the others, are well maintained. *Thank You to the Employees & Volunteers* Lots of Birds & Bees in the Flowers & Trees. And even a huge Turtle in the pond just off to the right by the parking area. No horses or bikes crossed my path so, they may not have been permitted on this part of the trail."
"This preserve is huge, over 1,200 acres. The preserve claims it is home to at at least 15 rare plants and insect species. This preserve has over 8 miles of trails. On the eastern portion of the preserve the yellow and grey trails take you through a diverse forest. Traversing the red trail takes you through row crops and open areas where most of it is not tree covered so avoid going in heat of the middle of a hot day. The purple trail takes you through the wetlands. And the blue trail takes you through open areas and forest. There are bathrooms at the Lenfest Center. A trail off of the back of the visitor center will take you to Ollie Owl's Nature Playground where a children's playground is build out of nature. The preserve also contains a potters field"
"Wow. I am pleastly surprised. I love a good hiking trail and they have a few good ones. I was able to take my kids on the red trail from the Lensfest Center to West Brandywine Creek. It was about 4 miles round trip and mostly an easy walk. Coming back you walk up 1 big hill and the little tikes were getting tired but there are plenty of benches that they took a rest. I am excited to go on more trials and we are planning to go to events and may even become a member. Do you love nature? If so, you need to visit."
