Reviews of Lapis
"Good service. Good vegetarian options. Nice atmosphere. This is how American restaurants whatever the cuisine is evolving. This place has arrived. The birthday personal recalled her last Afghanistan meal in Oakland 50 years ago was sitting on the floor and eating with her hand. Lapis is a universe away from that with three courses costing around 80 bucks per person. They have lots of vegetarian options and the decor is nice. But it is a modern DC restaurant and the prices reflect that. #afghanfood"
"Make reservations early!! We did brunch at 10 on a Saturday and were the first to sit. I’m pretty sure the owner was the waiter and he took such good care of not only my husband and I but four other tables at once. Constantly checked and the staff was also on it! The food…. Was phenomenal. It’s all halal! The rose and cardamom pancakes were just beyond. They also made me a special birthday desert which made me feel like a princess first thing today! And get a coffee to go, you won’t regret it! It’s so smooth and delicious. Definitely will be back!"
"This is a great spot for brunch with a wide menu and lots of veggie friendly options and customizations. I would definitely recommend this for atmosphere (although very busy) and food, the food is incredible. The service leaves a bit to be desired. Perhaps due to how busy they were, all of the staff we encountered were quite brusque. It definitely felt like rushed service, coffee came out cold. One of the servers kept knocking into my friends hair coming around the corner... They were nice enough to acknowledge it but seems like they shouldn't be so rushed that they are bumping into guests. Overall I'd recommended for the food, but think they could work on improving service."
"A fusion of Afghan flavors! This place can get busy so a reservation is recommended. They have indoor and outdoor heated seating. It is nicely decorated to reflect the essence of Afghanistan. I enjoyed looking around at the decor and photographs. The service was excellent and the staff is knowledgeable about the cuisine. We ordered the chicken ghormeh, Kabuli pulao, and the eggplant dish as our mains. They are a generous size, but each is enough for one. We also ordered shrimp dumplings and the Afghan flatbread with pumpkin. They have a great selection of wine and cocktails, and we opted for a rose from Lebanon. The food was excellent, fresh, and not heavy. Great location and ambiance. Menu is clearly labeled for anyone with food allergies. Many gluten-free options and an impressive selection for vegetarians."
"Lapis was a wonderful restaurant to visit. Be sure to get a reservation, this place stays busy! This was our first experience enjoying vegan Afghan cuisine and it was delicious. Be sure to mention you're vegan or dairy-free as they do have some sauces that contain milk. The dishes on the menu are clearly labeled as vegan, but double check the sauces or let your waiter know. Speaking of our waiter, he was really nice and let us know some of the options we could enjoy and he provided great service. We will definitely be back as there were plenty of menu options we did not get to try."
