About the Natural Lands' Glades Wildlife Refuge
Natural Lands' Glades Wildlife Refuge is a stunning park and tourist attraction located at Turkey Point Road in Downe, New Jersey, United States. This refuge offers a diverse landscape including tidal marshes, wooded uplands, beaches along the Delaware Bay, and an impressive old growth forest. The natural cycles and rhythms of the world are evident in the seasonal weather, migrating birds, and changing tides.
The refuge is home to a variety of grasses that thrive in tidal, brackish water, providing rich habitats for crustaceans, mollusks, and birds. The grasses also filter pollutants from the water and protect the shoreline from flooding and erosion. The forested swamps contain a mix of sweetgum, holly, red maple, and pitch pines, with a section of old-growth forest known as Bear Swamp.
One of the highlights of the refuge is the annual migration of horseshoe crabs to spawn on the moonlit beaches of the Delaware Bay in May. These crabs provide essential sustenance for migrating Red Knots, with up to 90 percent of the population found on the Bay in a single day. The refuge is also part of four "Important Bird Areas" designated by the National Audubon Society.
Visitors to Glades Wildlife Refuge should be prepared for biting flies and ticks, especially from mid-April to mid-September. Trails may be challenging during this time, so long pants, long-sleeve shirts, repellents, and head netting are recommended. Birdwatching is excellent due to the abundance of insects in the area.
The refuge has a rich history, with the largest preserve of Natural Lands Trust being the result of decades of land acquisition. The I. Tatnall Starr Memorial Trail honors Tat Starr's dedication to land preservation in New Jersey.
Natural Lands is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving open space, caring for nature, and connecting people to the outdoors. Visitors can learn how to combat light pollution and protect the nighttime ecosystem. The refuge is a prime location for birdwatching, especially during the migration seasons.

Reviews of Natural Lands' Glades Wildlife Refuge
"This preserve a such a unique and beautiful ecosystem we took a quick spin through it the other day, doing the NaturalLands challenge, and absolutely loved it. We want to come back and do some of the water trails in kayaks."
"We did the boardwalk trail, it's nice."
"Beautiful, untouched, VERY natural area- not far from society and some SW NJ cities (and Philly!) Highly recommend Fortescue Beach for seashells and a quiet stroll (careful about biting flies and vicious mosquitos during Spring-Fall however! I went on a warm day in early March and it was PERFECT!) And the actual main area (off Turkey Trail) offers some unbeatable birdwatching and rugged hiking. I specify rugged hiking as these trails are fairly unmaintained and reception is poor- plan to watch for animals, ticks, and bring a map and powerbank for your phone (and download digital maps beforehand!) Lots of bushwhacking will be rewarded by scenic views of nature, and plenty of peace and quiet. Hunting is allowed in certain areas seasonally so do check before your visit and wear hunting orange if necessary. Honestly it's even just a nice area to drive around if it's too chilly to roam. I saw a bald eagle! This was the best pic I could get though, as they flew away into the sunset. I'll definitely be back to this secluded gem of a lesser known area of our beautiful state!"
"Great place to see nature. Can spend a whole day here looking at everything. Beautiful place especially at night. There's hardly any light pollution so it's a great star gazing spot."
"Great place to go to recharge and soak in nature. The ocean air, beautiful views, and wildlife are breath-taking. It's wonderful if you are by yourself or with your family. I still feel the same, just a great place to relax."
