"These guys are the best, but here is the way this business works. The owner was born and raised here in Manchester. He passed the business on to his kids, who of course were also born here, went to the local schools, graduated from Manchester High School, UCONN and so on. They all care about the community, their neighbors, and the reputation of the business. They're wealthy, generous, transparent, caring people that have no interest in ripping customers off or taking advantage of employees. I know. I used to work here. On the other side of the coin is the way people in the car business get paid - and this applies to all dealerships - with few exceptions. The service advisors in the service department, the mechanics, the salespeople in the new and used car sales departments and the entire management team all get paid a wage and a commission. This is not a wage anyone could afford to live on unless someone is supporting them. However, in each and all of these areas is an opportunity to earn more money, and it is a percentage of revenue collected from customers, or their commission. Are we clear on that point? If a mechanic recommends a brake job that you don't need and the service advisor convinces you to pay for it, both of those individuals and their bosses are compensated for the revenue collected. If a salesperson tells you that the price on a vehicle is higher than the real asking price, he or she gets paid some percentage, generally around 30% of that additional amount. The owners also obviously benefit from this. So you can't expect them to make a concerted effort and spend a lot of time investigating situations where customers might be getting ripped off. There's nothing in it for them. You'll find the worst offenders in what they call the F&I, or Finance and Insurance departments. They'll sell you products and services at prices that vary widely from one customer to the next. If you're stupid enough to buy an extended warranty for $2,000 or more when their cost is about $800, the F&I salesperson would typically be paid around 10% the profit on that or $120. If you elect to buy the paint protection for $700, which does absolutely nothing, except what you'd get from a typical wax job applied to the car, and costs the dealers about $50 everyone is making money! The detailer, the salespeople, the F&I salesperson, the managers, and owners are laughing all the way to the bank. So what is a person to do? You have to seek out the honest minority of employees in these types of places. You are depending on the concience of the individual and not the reputation of the dealership to get good service or a vehicle at a fair price. You don't just find someone you think you can trust - you test them from time to time. Get a second opinion, just like you would if you were selecting a doctor. Tell them "OK, I'll consider doing that service on my vehicle the next time I bring it in, but I don't want to do it now. Then get a second opinion before your next service. And don't tell the second place what the first one recommended. If the second one doesn't recommend the same work, ask them straight out so does it need "X"? And if you find you don't have been honest service advisor, you don't need to go to a new dealership, where you'll find the same, but a new service advisor. There has to be at least one honest person in each department, right? Your job is to seek them out. Take a similar approach to salespeople when you're buying a new or used car. And for God's sake, JUST SAY NO to everything offered in the F&I department, except your vehicle's registration."
