Reviews of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem
"After taking a tour and being wooed by tales of their new $8 million dollar birthing wing, my husband and I decided to have our only child at Harlrm Hospital in July of 2005. It was a horrible experience start to finish. Two days of pain, minimal care, humiliation and neglect. What was supposed to be one of the most beautiful times of my life was one of trauma and regret. I wish I could turn back the clock and choose any other hospital. The only saving grace was having an older midwife around for the final hours of giving birth who just happened to be on call that day; otherwise I would have given up pushing and living. I really didn't care by that point if my child and I made it out of that place. I just spent 14 hours with my daughter-in-law during her birthing experience at UW Medicine here in Seattle and it was the most supportive, informative, caring experience. It was nirvana compared to the Hell I went through 18.5 years ago. I had to step out of the room a few times to just cry as the trauma of my own experience at this retched place came back to me in cold contrast. As a first time mother I had no idea what to expect and it enrages me that anyone would enter this profession, enter the birthing process, with so little care for the women, babies and families that trust them on this journey. Denial of pain relief (I had to beg for my epidural after 1.75 days on a pectocin drip. It wore off 8hrs later. I woke up in agonizing pain and was told "If it didn't hurt, how would you know when to push?" when I told the nurse how much pain I was in. A complete lack of birthing care/assistsnce during the birthing process (no warm compress on my perineum, no jell, no manual assistance for the birthing tunnel). Filthy afterbirth hygiene (my blood was on the floor for hours afterwards). Lack of information (I didn't see my baby for 8hrs after he was removed for a post-birth medicine administration, my husband had to go find him). I specifically told them I only wanted to breast feed but during those 8 hours they bottle fed him formula. Horrible lactation support (a nurse grabbed my breast, shook it and said "You don't have enough milk!" 24hrs after giving birth). These were the "gifts" from this disgusting institution. Avoid at all costs!!"
"Excellent trauma surgeon, some awful nursing staff. My child was the only one in the ICU and we were completely on our own while the nurses chatted loudly about an upcoming cruise. When I requested help to wash down my child (with a head trauma and a broken arm) I was told "you can do it yourself. He can walk". Many of nurses literally could not care less about the patients. Over the few day hospital stay there was only one nurse who cared for my son properly."
"If I can give them - zeros that’s exactly what they deserve. I’m referring to management, social work and, patient relations as well as doctors who have no compassion for critical traumatic brain injury patients. Especially if one goes in unidentified and without health insurance. On august 20th 2023, my love one the father of my children was sent to this hospital after a train accident and suffering serious injuries as it follows I received a message from the Doctor attending him and I returned the call as I was his emergency contact. During the process to get information I was contacted with a social worker by the name of Jessica Alvarez Aratengo 12th floor oversee, whom stated that as I was not legally married to him I could not be in care of him. Which it was shocking for I work in a hospital for years and never heard such thing. I explained my concern that he was to be transferred from nyc to PA to an acute rehab facility as she stated he would need acute care. This woman stated that he had no insurance therefore they could not transfer him then stated after I said well you are a social worker I believe you can start a process. The situation went from bad to worst she had stated to me as I kept calling to see the plan of care , she stated that his brother would be making the decision for his medical care, such thing never happened I went to visit him at the hospital with our children and a doctor as I was leaving stated he could go home, I ????? And I was confused sense the social worker had already stated the sibling would be in charge of him. Two day later he was sent to his sibling on a taxi with a serious brain injury by himself I had no idea of this until I had heard nothing from him and learning he was discharged and I assumed his sibling went to pick him up . He was then neglectfully by his own sibling taken to a bus station to ride back to nyc by himself after only being under the supervision of his sibling for two days. I am upset, hurt and distraught because, I reported him missing went back to nyc searching for him to only get authorities to contact me weeks later he had been found deceased, he didn’t know how to use a phone, nor remember phone numbers. This hospital FAILED HIM, he was a human being someone who was loved and waited to be reunited with his loved ones The people envolved are still providing their services after filing a complaint against their unethical behavior. I don’t understand, this was a cruel act. I became part of healthcare to be there for people through their illness and recovery . Here we have people who lack interest and compassion. No ethical standards just a degree and a paycheck for this disgust me. if by any chance others who did care for our loved one I thank you and may God bless you."
"When my wife and I arrived in NEW YORK from Colombia, I was AFRAID of this city, the capital of the world is an honorable mention that can only be admired from the outside, because the Yorker sees the way to do everything as very normal, the rigor of jobs, punctuality in appointments, the millions of people who travel on the subway rushing to reach their destinations, it is crazy to live in the multiculture of QUEENS, the challenge of aligning with its strict authorities, working among the rude BROOKLYN and the cosmopolitan MANHATTAN (glamor and asphalt), the demands of the tourist sector, being able to buy my first car in the STATEN ISLAND residential area, the Bronx that still smells to SALSA MUSIC, after 5 years in this city in Nov/23 we had my daughter (GIANNA) at the HARLEM CENTER HOSPITAL and I understood that fear what I felt was because I was not up to par with this city. I am still surprised. The hospital team is an example of cultural diversity and the most efficient and friendly service I could imagine, effort, quality, availability, good energy, coverage. comprehensive, the team is incredible, INFINITE THANKS to doctors and nurses: Campbell, Odesa, Luci, Oudi, Thomas, Bailey! Renee, Bubu, Julia, and those who helped me in these 3 wonderful days, social worker Cardenas, security team, cleaning team (impeccable), food team (the farewell dinner was too special), team of technicians, In general, HARLEM HOSPITAL CENTER is one of the reasons why I will live eternally grateful to NEW YORK and its hospitality, its people and the desire to remain being the first city… in the first country of the world."
"Terrible hospital especially the 13th floor. The nurses are terrible and lack of professionalism. They do not attend to the patients need's especially when they have those with the trach tubes in their throats and need to be suctioned. It damn near took almost 2 hours for someone to come suction and clean my brothers trach tube and area around it. This hospital is terrible and needs all new staff on that floor who are professional and care for the patients."
