Reviews of SUNY Upstate Medical University
"Let me start off by saying the nursing team, sitters, security, and others we dealt with were amazing. This review is strictly for the psychiatric team and their procedures at this hospital. We recently brought in our transgender, autistic son for a 5150, suicide, intervention. On New Year's Eve, my son overdosed on fetanyl. I administered Narcan and CPR until I was able to get him breathing. We contacted Helio after the overdose. I'm still working with them as well, but their biggest concern is to stop overdoses. They wanted to put my child on an opioid that would prevent overdosing, even though my child is not an avid opioid user. Being that my child was already a week past overdosing and made it through any withdrawals with minor symptoms. I had to push for my child, not to further opioid use. My child's issue is with substances, but the bigger issue is his lack of acceptance and depression. We were making a plan for outpatient intervention and had been watching him closely, not allowing to leave the house. He was at the store with my wife last week and was able to steal a pill bottle of cough medication. We were unaware until he started throwing up. Since the overdose, my child has mentioned suicide multiple times. After the suicide he told me multiple times it would have been more humane to let me die and then finish by saying how he would now have to kill himself. After the incident of throwing up in the sink. I was very insistent on him admitting to what he took and where it was. He admitted to taking cough medication but wouldn't tell me where it was. I made the decision to turn his room upside down until we eventually got the medication. He became very mad and continued suicidal threats. My wife and I have texts and recordings. After the weekend of not sleeping and watching our child constantly. All medications were removed from the house after the first overdose. Not we were at the point of barricading doors, hiding knives, removing any plug in electric devices from the bathroom. We decided something had to change. We took him into hospital and put him on suicide hold. We were hoping to force an inpatient rehabilitation. After being evaluated by the first member of the team, he saw no serious threat. He said my son didn't have a plan for suicide just thoughts. I'm sorry I didn't know we always pre-planned these events and draw diagrams of how they are going to do it. We had him evaluated again, and all of a sudden, he hits every check box. My child has had a hard time being accepted being autistic. Then, she changed her gender. Which I believe is an attempt to fit in. He has been through several small friend groups but has always struggled to fit in. His school reports alone were quite extensive. From having to be evaluated for suicidal threats two years ago. Forced therapy a year later to be able to graduate. It's been a long road, and the school didn't help much throughout his issues. The truth is tthere is a large portion of the population that doesn't accept transgender people. The world is more accepting than ever, but we as soc ety have not crossed that barrier as of yet. With all this being said on day three, we were giving three choices. Leave and setup set ufor outpatient, go forced inpatient and he would probably be released in under a week, or get im to go to an inpatient program. We were able to convince him to go with the inpatient route and seek help. After three days of trying to find a place we were, denied. It was stated that every rehabilitation program for substance abuse was unable to give him the psychological care he needed. We were sent home and giving an appointment in two months for psychological evaluation again. I'm just downright disgusted with the entire mental health care at this time. We are desperately now searching for an inpatient program as we provide the home care we can. How can there not be a better plan to help someone in this condition. Thank God my child has family support. I couldn't imagine someone in this situation left alone. We need to do better as a society!"
"They don't have the medicines i need like clarition and prevacid. They do involuntary holds without valid cause. They do not allow catholics to wear religious necklaces (scapulars) in the hospital. I was asked daily to remove it. They injected me with something each time i go and i can never find an online record of the name of what i was drugged with. Causes trouble with any logical thinking. I can only use memory on it. Also they make each person have a sitter person from their staff."
"They nurses on them surgical trams ICU were wonderful, could not have asked for a better team. On his current unit I would like to thank Kevin Walsh, RN for this care and understanding, as well as this attentiveness and bedside manor. He has a great understanding for patients with TBI. He listened and took all intervention to call MD to get medications due to pain and nausea. These individuals need a round of applause. I wish all medical staff could be like them. Thank you so much"
"I had 4 consecutive panic attacks within my 10 hour visit just to be told by TWO Psychiatric doctors, “good luck finding someone to help you”. I was admitted for a drug overdose the following day at Rome Memorial Hospital. These professionals at Upstate medical would rather you take your own life than offer you a proper treatment and evaluation. I don’t want to die. I want help for undiagnosed mental illness(es) that make my everyday functions difficult. If you are a psych patient, DO NOT go here. I went for help and left feeling helpless. So unfortunate for the student/nursing staff that try very hard to pick up the slack these “Doctors” are giving."
"Waiting area is filthy. Toilet clogged, vending machines empty. Patient brought in by ambulance (when asked to go to auburn but was told due to condition they recommend upstate). Then tell patient (a diabetic) do not eat or drink, while still waiting in waiting room currently at 8 hours later and counting."
