"Horrible experience. This is my first spring/summer in my new house and I basically had not much lawn to start, so I was planning to put down 1 inch of topsoil across my whole property. First of all, they took forever to deliver it, it was several weeks and maybe a month. I understand we had some rainy weather, but others were delivering topsoil. Finally they scheduled a delivery. I paid for premium black topsoil, they literally dropped off 10 yards of "semi" clean fill. It was clumpy, rocky, glass in it and absolutely no organic matter. I had to start my project so i tried to make the best of it, which was a mistake. It was impossible to spread, and caked within days of getting it down. Also the truck left a huge dent in my driveway. When i raised this with them, all i wanted was for them to pick up what was left (about 4 yards) and have their guys spread new soil down where i had completed. They sent some guys to rake the bad soil and reseed and that was it. My lawn was ruined, I have 4 yards of unclean fill i can't do anything with and my driveway has a chunk missing. Responding to owner: Yes, it was appreciated that a crew was sent and Yes it was my decision to want to seed early, however the issue is that I ordered premium top soil and was delivered "semi" clean fill, there was no organic material in it whatsoever and if you could not do the job then you should have just said sorry we can't do it. The hole in the driveway was 100% from the truck because when it arrived i heard the gate smash on the ground when they opened it, it sounded like a bomb went off. Instead of sending a defensive and inaccurate reply why don't you just take some accountability as a business?"
"Contacted Steck's to inquire about topsoil on Saturday 9/12. Outstanding topsoil was delivered on Monday, 9/14 and placed exactly where I requested despite proximity to overhead wires. Driver was a great guy, both skilled and professional. I am doing a front lawn renovation and many people have wanted to know where we scored such beautiful topsoil. We are sending them all your way! Thank you! Highly recommended!"
"Amazing customer service. Even better knowledge and work done at our house. They revitalized and gave such a beautiful vision to our yard. I have lived in the home for 15 years but never would have thought that slight patio modifications and a few different bushes would make the backyard such a pleasure to be in! Even long time friends who have visited have been blown away but the "makeover"."
"I do not usually write reviews - especially negative ones - but felt compelled in this case given the consistent discourtesy with which I was recently treated spanning across the first - and what can be confirmed as the last - two times I visited Stecks. The first time I went, I was shopping around looking at plants. There were two female employees literally just standing there watching me - it was bizarre. They didn't offer to help, I didn't see anything that piqued my interest, and I left. The second time I went was two days after Christmas... I went there hoping to get some discounted seasonal decor. When I walked in, the place smelled like cigarette smoke, and I immediately heard the harsh clamor beign produced by a man on the 2nd floor throwing large, cardboard boxes down the stairs. He issued a terse "be right down" and, after another five minutes or so of chucking boxes down the stairs, he came down and stood by the register waiting. He said none of the seasonal stuff was on sale, at which point I should have just walked out and gone up the street to Hollandia where I could've found the same thing for 50% off and been greeted with a smile instead of flying boxes by a grouchy man. But for some reason I went ahead and purchased the two angels I had in my hands. He was unfriendly throughout the exchange. I was there buying those two angels because I had recently lost my mom, and I went there to cheer up by purchasing something that would remind me of her as Christmas had been her favorite holiday. I went into a place that looked so festive and inviting from the outside, but in truth was smelly, loud, unpleasant, and run by people who apparently couldn't care less whether their customers come back or not. It never ceases to amaze me how frequently business owners and operators squander opportunities to take enough pride in their work to smile and connect. Maybe they were all having bad days... both times. I was having a bad few months when I visited, yet somehow I was the friendly one. Good luck with that approach - hopefully your workmanship and shrubbery expertise exceed the quality of your customer service and your personalities. I will not be around to attest whether or not that's the case."
"May 2016. We have had Jo.. & Melis.. work on 3 projects for our home in Fairfield over the last 3 years to repair Sandy damage of trees that slowly died from salt water flooding. Every project was easily planned and quoted... work was always done in a day and all 3 times exceeded our expectations (both professionally & visually). They are hard to find from April to late May.. because they are always working, but has been worth it for us to wait until after Mem Day to get the best deal(s).."
