About the Business
Ashintully Gardens is a captivating tourist attraction located on Sodom Road in Tyringham, Massachusetts, United States. Visitors can wander through an intimate setting of outdoor sculpture and elegant gardens, nourished by a gurgling stream. Nestled within the forested hills of the Tyringham Valley, Ashintully Gardens blends formal and informal gardens with the ruins of a historic mansion, offering a unique and multigenerational history.
The estate was originally owned by the Tytus-McLennan family, who built a Georgian-style mansion known as the Marble Palace on the property. Contemporary classical composer John McLennan dedicated 30 years to creating the gardens, which earned him the prestigious Hunnewell Medal from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in 1997.
Visitors can explore the half-mile woodland trail to the ruins of the Marble Palace, where the Doric columns stand as a rugged reminder of its past. The gardens feature footbridges, grassy terraces, and stunning constructed elements like urns, columns, and statuary. The natural features, including a stream, native trees, and meadows, provide a serene setting for a leisurely stroll.
To reach Ashintully Gardens, travelers can take Route 20 South from the Mass Turnpike and follow the signs to Sodom Road. Parking is available on the lawn near the entrance, with a property map posted for reference. Visitors are encouraged to photograph the map or download a trail map before setting out on their adventure.
In addition to exploring Ashintully Gardens, visitors can participate in The Trustees Hiking Challenge, which offers over 100 places and hundreds of miles of trails to explore. The property also allows on-leash or off-leash dogs, with guidelines for walking your canine companion.

"Ashintully Gardens is free and open to the public during the regular season from April to November between sunrise and sunset. Plenty of parking on the lawn is available. A map of the loop trail is available online and on a pair of prominent kiosks. No dogs or picnics are allowed on this property. Professional photographers hoping to conduct portrait photoshoots must contact The Trustees and become members of the organization. I highly encourage anyone who enjoys hiking to visit this secluded site."
"Beautiful piece of property. Would have liked to have seen more gardens with flowers."
"Beautiful nature preserve and gardens with open vistas of Berkshires. Walking path to Tytus mansion ruins adds the charm to the experience. No problem with parking on summer weekday. The only missing element of the puzzle is absence of public restrooms of any kind. The place is quite magical in a good weather."
"Easy hike and a real neat experience at the end, seeing the old ruins of this mansion. You can see pictures of the original house inside the barn, if you can get in. The entrance to the trail was a little hard to find, but just go behind the barn. It's not a typical trail so you're walking on grass and you'll start to find paths."
"Amazing location, probably one of my new favorites for photography spots. From where we come from its a little bit of a drive but crazy worth it. Definitely coming back because there is so much to see in this area. The hike is not a long or vigorous one, which makes it perfect for getting to where you want to be. A short climb up the mountain and you are in the heart of the abandoned mansion. Upon your decent there is other ruins and eventually you are met with a garden with some old relics. I was very happy to find this place and the kids loved it too!"
