Reviews of Orpheum Theatre
"On December 10 1995 my husband and I saw Bob Dylan at the Orpheum. Patty Smith opened for him. I was pregnant with our son at the time. I’m November 4, 2023 my son and I returned to the Orpheum for a Bob Dylan show. Bob Dylan did not disappoint. The show was awesome."
"Had a great time at the Ashley McBride concert. The place was clean, but the bathrooms were not well stocked. Overpriced snack/drink bar as most places are today. Staff that checked us in were positive and upbeat, but the staff I encountered to get to our seats once inside were a bit rude. My husband told one usher our seat and asile number. The guy said, "Hand me your ticket like you DO when you attend the THEATER." I just found his tone and attitude unnecessary."
"Attended the Derek Hough show in late November 2023. Really terrible experience. We purchased seats late, so we were in the farthest back section of the balcony, but I would expect for $75 a ticket we would be able to at least see the stage. Not so. We were about four rows up from the railing, and the railing cut right through our field of view of the stage. I spent the whole show forward in my seats basically on my knees with my feet crossed behind me to be able to see anything, and even then we had zero visibility of the front 10 feet of the stage. During the bows, everyone had to stand up to be able to see the performers. Also, the seats were low to the ground and extremely short depth-wise, and combined with the narrow aisles, when sitting in the seats our knees were up against the seats in front of us. Probably a much better experience visually if you have seats on the floor, but even those seats do not seem to have been restored in any way and are decrepit. I have family members involved in restoring a 1920s theater in a different town, and they have managed to restore the theater and make it comfortable without losing any of the original feel of the theater, so the extreme uncomfortableness of the theater is not unfixable. Lastly, even though they held the show start for 10 minutes, they were still seating huge numbers of people through the first 10 minutes of the show; my whole section missed seeing the initial curtain drop because a large group was walking across the front of the section. The voice over the PA said the problem was the line at the outside door, but many of the people arriving late had drinks in their hands, so they clearly had not been in any hurry to get seated. Clearly the facility was more interested in getting money from selling drinks than providing a good experience to those who bothered to get to the theater in time to be ready for 7 pm. Never, ever, ever going to a show at this venue again."
"The theater is beautiful and a part of Boston's history. Acoustically, it is amazing. We recently attended 2 performances within a 2 week period. Prior, we had not been in the Orpheum since 2010. While they have renovated to some degree (looks like they still are renovating) the 'new seats' are low to the ground and just as small as the old ones. Seating is tight and unless you are 5'2" and 120lbs, you will be uncomfortable and crippled by the time you leave. If you want to eat or have a cocktail be prepared to be disappointed. Your choices are pretzels and pizza, along with an array of cheap wine, beer and cocktails in a can. Get to the city early and go have dinner and drinks prior. You'll spend the same money and you won't annoy the rest of the guest getting up and down every 30 minutes to get a drink. Most of the staff is friendly and helpful until the performance starts, then they all turn into the little pests and snitches you hated as a kid. Marching up and down isles and rows with their stupid little flashlights threatening everyone who dared to look at their phone. The self imposed no picture rule at the recent Geddy Lee 'my Effin Life' was all Orpheum, not the artist. The staff were all squirrelly to begin with and they all did their best impression of a prison guard. A news flash for them; people were taking pictures all night and you missed most of them while you were busy chastising someone who dared to look at their phone. Next time post it online and not some stupid sign in the lobby that no one read."
"I'm usually quite critical, but the charm and grandeur of this old theater really touched my heart. We enjoyed a live concert (Tribute to ABBA). The theater was not full, so we were allowed to move freely to other seats, and we chose the front of the balcony, great view of the stage, and enough space to stand and dance. Good lighting and sound (the volume was too high, like at all live concerts, so we used high fidelity ear plugs). Yes, it's old and worn, could use some updating, and the seats are somewhat narrower than in other places. But the ticket prices were much more reasonable so overall it was a good experience and good value."
