"I've lived at The Novella for about 4 months, and it's been awesome! First off, the location is great – right near downtown, surrounded by many great places to eat. Whether I'm in the mood for something fancy or just a quick bite, everything's just a walk away. The apartment itself is super cozy and just nice to be in with thoughtfully designed rooms. For me, the best part is the apartment management team. From leasing to maintenance, every interaction has been a pleasure. The staff are not only professional but also genuinely caring."
"We've been living at the Novella for almost a year now, during a one-year stay in New Haven. Overall, it's been fine. The building is kept in good shape and the management is on top of things. Whenever we've had any issues, maintenance has been super quick to respond, and the staff have been really accommodating with our requests. What stands out about the Novella is the size of the apartments. These floor plans are spacious. But the finishes are only passable, nothing mind-blowing, just decent. Everything, including appliances, kind of has that ten-year-old feel, you know? The kitchen cabinets are covered in cheap fake veneer adhesives which have started to peel. The bathrooms are outfitted with large vanities and deep drawers, which is nice. One of our door handles is randomly mismatched. The windows are massive. While it’s pretty, in the summer, our second bedroom became a sauna. The vents have no speed control, so you can’t cool one room more (and it’s 4–6 degrees hotter). Some of our vents were also installed backwards — directing the air…away. Let's talk about those blinds they give you. They're those flimsy metal office blinds. Would it have been that hard to just install the standard plastic ones? And the toilets — super weak flush game. We clogged our first toilets here. It’s a bit annoying that this is something you have to worry about. Showers and kitchen sink aren't superstars, either — water pressure is among the weakest I’ve seen. The laminate floors get coated in a cheap Home Depot sealant before you move in. Looks shiny on move-in day but then shows every little scuff mark and scratch, and before long, they appear 10x older than they are. The vinyl plank flooring would have done just fine on its own. As part of the building's settling process, there was lots of drywall splitting where the walls meet the ceiling. Not the best look. Plus, cracks from bad patching work around the walls. Parking's a bit of a squeeze, too. No guest parking spots, and the regular spaces are a tight fit. Getting out of a regular-sized car requires acrobatics. You’re better off squeezing in first and pulling out of your spot before your passengers get in. You’ll receive a notice if you park too close. But the lines are cramped. Appliances: the stacked washer is much smaller than average, but the power-vented dryer works fast! The central AC is as loud as a window unit. Too loud. Recently, there was a big fire that put the patio out of commission. Imagine our midnight evacuation with a sleeping toddler, about eight fire trucks pulling up. Our apartment was maybe 20ft from the fire, and it was traumatic — we saw it engulfing the outdoor patio with barbecue gas lines. We ran down six flights, absolutely terrified of a possible gas explosion. The building basically...ignored it. No acknowledgment at all. They sent out an email the next day saying the rooftop patio would be closed. When there's a fire, the playbook suggests an email to your tenants showing concern for their safety and well-being, and *some* context for what caused the fire. Instead, we got "the rooftop will be closed." It's like a lesson in what not to do. Those of us who lived right next to the fire and had no idea whether the gas line could explode…at the very least WE deserved more. For a place that puts up flyers for everything, from national watermelon day to black cat day, ice cream day, popcorn day, and more, the lack of acknowledgment was so insensitive to those of us who experienced the fire firsthand. So, all in all, we've enjoyed our time at the Novella. However...we have visited friends living in other comparably priced buildings nearby, like The Whit, which are so much nicer and less cheaply outfitted. In retrospect, if other local options in the same price range were available, we would have 100% gone for them instead. If you’ve lived in mid-rise luxury buildings before, you’ll know where the Novella stands. We strongly recommend looking at the other options, but if this is your first time in a building like this, the Novella will do."
"I’ve lived here for 2 years. Overpriced, cheap chic. Management/trio is horrendous. Rude and unaccommodating. Ads for ridiculous events and treat tenants like children. There was a rooftop fire over the weekend and we were not apprised of events nor people’s safety. Just “rooftop closed indefinitely.” Mind you, it had just re-opened for a short time. Here’s to a summer enjoying it! Lastly, the hallways wreak of trash since they have a “mandatory trash valet.” Not only is it disgusting but also unsafe and a blatant fire hazard. Would stay away!"
"I lived in The Novella for almost two years and it was a very positive experience. My apartment was modern and spacious and the building facilities were always kept in great condition. The property manager (Craig) is incredibly nice, accommodating, and very easy to work with. And the building facilities staff (especially George) is very responsive and kind and really works to resolve whatever issues you're having. It's also a great apartment building for dog owners!"
"I thoroughly enjoyed my experience living at The Novella for the last three years. I found the amenities to be particularly useful - a washer/dryer in the unit, a nice gym area, open common area, a cozy movie theater (ideal for hosting events with friends), and a quiet conference room and two study rooms with ample natural lighting. The rooftop on the 6th floor was also a nice retreat when some fresh air and a nice view of downtown New Haven were desired. And, the building is run by kind managers and a responsible maintenance team! Highly recommend The Novella to anyone who wants a fabulous living experience in the downtown area!"
