Reviews of The Capitol Hotel, Ascend Hotel Collection
"Pretty solid hotel. I liked: Clean, decent sized rooms Firm but comfy bed Downtown location Nice staff Solid breakfast Guaranteed a high floor BBQ resto next door Booked for way cheaper on a 3rd party site Didn’t like: $15/night parking Outdoor noise coming from train station and parking lot Not great pillows Washroom on the smaller side"
"I wound up stay 5 nights at a hospital rate which was great and less than a mile from Hartford Hospital. The front desk was helpful and courteous. I had no issues with rechecking in due to my day to day stay at this rate. Yes, it’s near the train station but I didn’t notice this as it was quiet at night. The breakfast was great and the staff managing that was pleasant. Hot and cold offerings. Coffee was good. I used the laundry room which was clean and easy to pay for with credit card. My mattress was great. Not soft at all but firm like I prefer. The room was small and clean. No mold in bathroom and no must smells at. The hotel is in process of renovating so some rooms are done. Mine wasn’t but I thought it was fine. The beautiful Bushnell Park is across the street and the Capital building is beautiful at night. Hartford has changed a lot over the last 25 years and seems more quiet now as commercial businesses has moved away but it’s still a lovely setting."
"Be aware that this hotel is near the train station and there are a number of panhandlers in the area. At night it feels sketchy. The room itself was nice except for the pink streaky stains over some of the towels. Bed was comfortable. I asked for a quiet room and the floor itself, the 5th, had garbage bags sitting outside the doors - many doors. It was still there when I woke up. The people next to me had an ongoing party with people coming in and out of the room all night. I got zero sleep. This trash person let the door slam at 2:30AM. People were hanging outside in the hallway on their cellphones with the sound turned up. The man there is the morning was very nice and did help me. When I mentioned about the people making noise next door he checked, then said he knew that one of the people in the room was a troublemaker. So the hotel is letting people knowingly create problems and doing nothing. Obviously they need the money. Someone who cannot respect other guests should be bounced out, period. I don't recommend staying here unless absolutely necessary. It is a shame, as the room really was very nice. The hotel reached out and asked what it should do and I mentioned a quiet floor being designated. My best guess is people are living here now and treating it like it is their personal home. The staff could no doubt entice more people to come if they smiled more and took some genuine interest in the people who want to stay here. They are nice, but overly reserved. The hospitality industry used to stand for a lot more. Sad times."
"Needed to catch a train in the morning. Perfect location...just cross the parking lot and Union Station is right there. Was able to park my car under the hotel for the week I was away. Room was clean, not fancy, but well-priced. Breakfast very good...hot food, not just bagels and toast. View of the Capital out my 7th floor window was terrific! Kept my curtains open to see that all night. I will go again when I decide to take the train somewhere again. The front desk people were courteous, helpful and lovely."
