Sandfly Bay Walk
About the Business
Welcome to Sandfly Bay Walk, located in the beautiful Dunedin area and Otago Peninsula region of New Zealand. As part of the Sandfly Bay Wildlife Refuge, our institution offers a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the stunning natural beauty of this area.
Please note that a section of the refuge is closed from 1 November to 28 February, inclusive, in order to protect the wildlife that call this area home. However, from our viewing platform, you can still enjoy breathtaking views of Sandfly Bay, the coastline, and the wild ocean beyond.
To access the beach, simply follow the signs from the viewing platform. The track leading to the beach follows a sandhill and can be quite steep. Please be aware that due to sand movement and erosion, the track is maintained to a tramping track standard only. Follow the orange marker poles and signs to ensure you stay on the track.
It is important to note that this track requires a good level of fitness, and erosion can sometimes make certain parts of the track difficult to walk. We recommend taking caution and wearing appropriate footwear.
When visiting Sandfly Bay Walk, please turn off Highcliff Road onto Seal Point Road. The track begins at the Sandfly Bay carpark located at the end of this road. We kindly advise against leaving any valuables in your car, as there have been break-ins in the past.
While the beach at Sandfly Bay is undoubtedly beautiful, it is important to exercise caution when swimming, particularly during periods of strong winds and currents.
As you explore the track, please remember that it crosses private land. We kindly ask that you stay on the formed track and respect the boundaries of the surrounding properties. Additionally, there may be livestock in the area, so please refrain from disturbing them and maintain a safe distance.
At Sandfly Bay Walk, we offer a truly unique and immersive experience in the heart of New Zealand's natural wonders. Come and discover the beauty of Sandfly Bay, where nature and wildlife thrive in harmony.

"Great walk and views, but no penguins! At least not in Feb 2023. Didn't see any seals either. Must be on a different bay this year. Can get cold at sunset so bring a jacket or jumper!"
"Beautiful drive here, nice walk through sheep and sand dunes, long walk along the beach so be sure to take sunscreen and water. Current here is very strong for swimming. There were lots of pesky seals down the other end of the beach preventing access around the rocks."
"I was lucky enough to see the sea lions bask in the beach and penguins from a distance. The walk down isn’t too bad, but the walk back up can be a bit challenging in the sand. The sand is quite loose."
"Great shore line. Require half a kilometre hiking to get down. The foot path vanishes completely into sand after a small stretch. While ascending it is quite a task walking in the loose sand. The shore line is just amazing.. beautiful crystal clear waters bombarding the shore. The standing rocks inside the sea add a solid background. What really amazed me is that the speed of the wind blowing there. Quite synonymous with the name 'Sandfly beach', sand keeps flying literally as thin layers with great speed. Eyes, nose and camera lenses are not spared by the hitting sand. One can see lot of fur seals basking on the sand dunes. Care should be taken to not disturb them and they should be observed from a safe distance. I had wonderful experience. This place is highly recommended as a not-to-miss spot."
