Sandymount Recreation Reserve
About the Business
Welcome to Sandymount Recreation Reserve, located in the picturesque Dunedin area and Otago Peninsula in the Otago region of New Zealand. As an establishment, park, and point of interest, Sandymount Recreation Reserve offers a range of activities and stunning views for visitors to enjoy.
To begin your adventure, start your walk to the viewpoint by entering a tunnel of historic macrocarpa trees from the car park at the end of Sandymount Road. As you wander through the coastal pastureland for approximately 1 kilometer, you'll be surrounded by the beauty of nature. Finally, you'll reach the viewpoint, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views to the northeast. From here, you can admire the panoramic vistas over Allans Beach, Hoopers Inlet, Poatiri/Mt Charles, and even inland to Wharekākahu/Harbour Cone.
For those seeking a more challenging hike, the circuit track continues along the coastline, providing access to Sandymount summit. From there, a marked route will lead you to the stunning Sandfly Bay before returning you back to the car park. Alternatively, you can access Sandymount summit and the Sandfly Bay route via a track opposite the car park, independent of the circuit track.
To reach Sandymount Recreation Reserve, simply turn off Highcliff Road onto Sandymount Road. The track begins at the end of the road, ensuring easy access for all visitors.
Please note that this is an exposed coastal site, so take caution around cliff areas, especially after heavy rain when they may become slippery and unstable. Additionally, as the circuit track passes through a working farm, please be mindful of moving vehicles. Ongaonga, also known as stinging nettle, grows in certain areas along the track, so be cautious of this plant. During high winds, it is advisable to avoid forest areas as branches may fall from the trees.
Lastly, we kindly remind you not to leave any valuables in your car, as there have been break-ins reported in the area.
We hope you have a wonderful time exploring the beauty and tranquility of Sandymount Recreation Reserve. Enjoy the stunning views, the invigorating walks, and the peaceful surroundings that make this reserve a true gem on the New Zealandn landscape.

Reviews
"Great views and a very nice walk of an hour. I recommend counter clockwise to have an easier clime up. Take the route via the inlet (with high tides). Two picknick tables at the small carpark. Accessible also with campervans."
"Great views, easy track although plenty of evidence of sheep having been there recently when crossing farmland! It was very windy at the lookout when we were there."
"Breathtaking views from the lookout (1km from the carpark), it was much better than the viewpoint (500m from the carpark), and an easier walk through the trees and across some farmland to a beautiful viewing platform down towards Allan's Beach"
"such a beautiful spot! short but sweet walk (decently steep so give yourself plenty of time walking back) beautiful views the whole way down. make sure you go while the tide is low enough to go down to the beach!"
"Very easy walk with gorgeous views and scenery all along the track. Start your walk at the chasm and loop around to lover's leap and then the beach. The sand dunes are more difficult to traverse but worth it. This is a must do."
