SPELD NZ Inc
About the Business
Welcome to SPELD NZ Inc, located at 215 Railway Road in Hastings, New Zealand. As New Zealand's leading provider of support for children and adults with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities, we are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of those who struggle with these challenges.
For over 50 years, SPELD NZ has been a not-for-profit organization specializing in assisting individuals with dyslexia and specific learning disabilities. Our trained Assessors use the Woodcock-Johnson test batteries to conduct in-depth assessments, evaluating each individual's intellectual and educational strengths and weaknesses.
Our Teachers are highly qualified classroom teachers who have undergone specialized SPELD NZ training. They provide personalized, evidence-based tuition tailored to each student's needs, based on their assessment report.
In addition to our assessment and tuition services, SPELD NZ offers an NZQA-approved Level 5 program, assessor training, and professional development for teachers, special educational needs coordinators (SENCO), Learning Support Coordinators, teacher aides, families, and caregivers.
We also provide advice, support, and advocacy for those with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities. Financial support may be available for those who struggle to afford assessment and tuition.
The impact of our specialized intervention has been proven to vastly improve learning outcomes. Journalists Julie and David share their experience of evidence-based support that worked for their dyslexic daughter, Poppy.
Each year, we help thousands of children with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities. But it is not just children who struggle; many adults still face challenges with dyslexia and specific learning disabilities. Our Teachers create individualized programs targeting their learning and life needs.
At SPELD NZ, we are committed to training Assessors and educators. We offer NZQA-approved courses for teachers, teacher aides, SENCO, Learning Support Coordinators, and other educators.
We also work with organizations to assess and support employees with dyslexia and other specific learning disabilities.
Despite the struggles faced by thousands of New Zealanders with specific learning difficulties, getting the targeted help they need can transform their lives. Isabelle, diagnosed with severe dyscalculia as a child, went on to become a makeup artist and now supports others who struggle with numbers. Dyslexic Professor Emeritus David Mellor reflects on the "phenomenal impact" of his tutor 70 years ago. Pip Coombes' entire approach to teaching literacy was overhauled when she trained as a SPELD NZ Teacher. Bayley Garnham's struggles made sense when he was diagnosed with dyspraxia and dysgraphia at the age of 12, and family support played a crucial role in his success.
