The Flagstaff Track itself is a short but steep 40-minute walk that serves as a convenient way up or down Flagstaff. It is also one of several alternative starting points for Dunedin's Skyline Walks. Beginning at the Bull Ring carpark on Flagstaff Whare Flat Road, you'll embark on a well-gravelled track that meanders through enchanting manuka scrub. Gradually, the landscape transitions into beautiful tussock land, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills covered in tussock to the west and the vibrant city of Dunedin to the east.
Upon reaching the geodatum marker at the top of Flagstaff, installed by the Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club in 1973, you'll be treated to a panoramic display of the surrounding peaks and geographical features. This plane table serves as a fascinating educational tool, highlighting the natural wonders of the area. From the summit of Flagstaff, you can also continue your adventure by exploring other tracks, such as the Flagstaff Firebreak Track, which loops back to the Bull Ring.
To access Flagstaff Loop Track, simply take Three Mile Road and turn right onto Flagstaff-Whare Flat Road. Drive for approximately 2.5km until you reach the Bullring Carpark. It's important to note that weather conditions on Flagstaff and Swampy Summit can change rapidly, so be sure to bring a warm windproof layer with you to ensure your comfort and safety. Additionally, there are no rubbish bins on the Flagstaff Track, so please remember to take any rubbish you bring away with you, leaving this pristine natural environment as you found it.
Embark on a memorable journey through Flagstaff Loop Track, immersing yourself in the stunning landscapes, rich flora, and fascinating geological features. Whether you're seeking a challenging hike, educational experience, or simply a peaceful escape into nature, Flagstaff Loop Track is the perfect destination for you.
